Univision, the Spanish language network whose ratings have challenged the broadcast channels in recent years, announced on Friday that in addition to its standard fare of originals — including news show, comedies, reality competition series and telenovelas — it would also be producing Spanish language remakes of “Breaking Bad” and “Gossip Girl,” among other dramas, for its Millennial-centric channel UniMás.
It was exciting news, marred only by the fact that “Breaking Bad” producer Sony Pictures Television noted immediately afterward that the studio has not actually closed a deal with Univision for a Spanish-language adaptation, having shot and shopped one around but not yet finalized a network.
“Metastasis” – Based on the critically acclaimed American series “Breaking Bad,” “Metastasis” is the story of a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling meth with a former student with the goal of securing his family’s financial future before he passes away. (Primetime – Sony)
Yup, that sounds like “Breaking Bad.” While this is Sony TV’s first adaptation of “Breaking Bad” (which is set in New Mexico and has actually featured several Spanish-speaking characters in its original incarnation), the company has adapted other series, including “Married… With Children,” “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “The King of Queens” for various international markets. “Raymond” creator Philip Rosenthal made his feature directorial debut with “Exporting Raymond,” a 2010 doc about making a Russian language version of his sitcom.
