Check out this new video featurette on the smashing, screeching, high-tailing action in “Fast & Furious 6,” which should continue to rack up the grosses when Universal opens the latest iteration of the multi-ethnic action franchise on May 24. “For this one we figured we’d go big or go home,” director Justin Lin mentions in the promo. Which marks a difference from the franchise’s other small, subtle entries. Watch below.
I saw at CinemaCon an exhilarating high-speed elevated highway chase sequence with multiple cars and a tank commandeered by newbie villain Luke Evans and returning Michelle Rodriguez. There’s also a memorable fight between Rodriguez and Gina Carano. Onstage in Las Vegas, “Furious” vets Vin Diesel and Paul Walker expressed the family feeling that makes them give their utmost to this project, as the ensemble watch each others’ backs.
In other words, much like Screen Gems’ “Resident Evil” series, when a team commits long term to making a series great, it can be a gift that keeps on giving. Already in the works, “Fast and Furious 7” will open July 11, 2014.
2011’s “Fast Five” had a total worldwide haul of $626 million, with a $210 million domestic take; 33% of that domestic audience was Hispanic, the fast-growing U.S. demo. The last two with Lin at the helm opened in April with record weekends
above $70 million and $85 million each. Box Office Mojo predicts that “Fast & Furious 6” will come close if not slightly surpass those domestic numbers, despite opening against “The Hangover Part III” over Memorial Day Weekend.
