This past week, at the Cannes Film Festival, Toei has unveiled this ten-minute preview for their anime epic Buddha 2: Endless Journey. Based on Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga series, the second part of a planned trilogy, the feature is scheduled to be released theatrically in Japan in February 2014.
The sequel was three years in production – unusually long by Japanese standards. The original manga by Tezuka was first publishd in 1972 and was serialized through 1983. The first anime adaptation, Buddha: The Great Depature, was directed by Kozo Morishita (Dragon Ball Z, Bobobo-bo-Bo-bobo) animated by Toei Animation and released by Toei Company and Warner Bros. Pictures on May 28, 2011.
Morishita returns as producer for the new film, Toshiaki Komura is the director. Beautifully old-school and pretty intense, here’s the trailer for Buddha 2:
