Maybe I spent too much time watching NBC’s pre-race coverage of the 139th Kentucky Derby. By the time it was time for the actual race, I felt as if I had already sat through all 139 of those past races.
When I watched the pomp and circumstance following Orb’s stirring win (isn’t every horse’s Derby win stirring, though?), I suddenly wondered: What if Bob Costas could interview the winning horse. Hey, why not?
Costas is America’s most respected sports journalist. He has been known to ask NBA Commissioner David Stern tough questions on the air even as his very loyal employer is broadcasting the game. He has excellent journalistic ethics in addition to his sharp reporting skills.
And let’s face it, Costas has already stuck a microphone in front of every great athlete. So, why not a horse?
Of course, I’m kidding around. I enjoy Costas’ work. But if you sat through NBC’s exhaustive, over-long coverage of the Derby, you’d be a little punchy, too, and be hoping for something like this, too.
With a nod to the late, great Mister Ed, here are 5 Questions Bob Costas Would Probably Ask the Winning Horse:
1) How does it feel?
2) How much help did you get from your teammates?
3) Is this the high point of your career?
4) To what do you owe this stirring victory?
5) How does it feel?
Come to think of it, this interview wouldn’t be so different than the ones that Costas and every other sportscaster has ever conducted with a triumphant sports icon.
