’50 Shades of Grey’ Screenwriter Kelly Marcel to Rewrite Joe Wright’s ‘Little Mermaid’

'50 Shades of Grey' Screenwriter Kelly Marcel to Rewrite Joe Wright's 'Little Mermaid'

From S&M to… mermaids? Brit screenwriter Kelly Marcel (“Terra Nova”), who has been working on adapting E.L James’ mega-bestseller “50 Shades of Grey” for the big screen, has another project in the works. Per Deadline, Marcel is in talks to rewrite Joe Wright’s “The Little Mermaid.”

Marcel steps into the project after many have already worked on the long-in-the-works Working Title adaptation, including Abi Morgan (“Shame”).

In the more immediate pipeline for Marcel is Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” an Oscar-season entry set for December 20 starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers; the film centers on their courtship. Early awards buzz is strong on this one.
