ANIME DVD UPDATE: Robotech 2-Movie Collection

ANIME DVD UPDATE: Robotech 2-Movie Collection

My late partner in Streamline Pictures, Carl Macek, made a lasting mark in pop culture and anime history, by creating Robotech (1985). The 85-episode syndicated series has gone on to have a large subsequent life with sequels, prequels, comic books, toys, a devoted fandom and a live action movie in development at Warner Bros. (produced by Tobey Maguire). Now the Robotech saga continues with this upcoming DVD/blu-ray release.

The Robotech saga continues as the celebrated characters that gained world-wide popularity in the original series return in an exciting new adventure debuting as part of the Robotech: 2-Movie CollectionArriving on DVD July 23rd from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, under license from A+E Networks Consumer Products, the Robotech: 2-Movie Collection DVD set includes the never-before-seen feature Love Live Alive as well as the timeless Robotech hit The Shadow Chronicles.

The “never before seen Love Live Alive” was an OAV released in Japan in 1985. This is its first release in English. It’s original running time was listed at only 50 minutes. The new release says 90 minutes.  They must have added new material to the Japanese original. Here are a few exclusive frames from that feature:

Apparently the new footage consists of the expanded backstory of Lancer's arrival on Earth. (Interestingly enough, Tommy Yune wrote a Robotech comic book covering those events. Hmmm.) It's going to be interesting to see how well they managed to match the new footage to the old. Can they avoid "Robotech: The Movie" redux?

"I already own "The Shadow Chronicles" so why do I have to purchase it again to buy this DVD?"

Harmony Gold has a history of milking Robotech as George Lucas had for Starwars. This would be fourth (?) re-release of Shadow Chronicles. Don't buy this piece of shit. If you really want this bonafide DVD-extra short movie, then wait for the Bluray edition on the second hand market next year. That way Harmony Gold won't get your money and release garbage like this over and over.

I have two questions. First, why is this not being released on Blu-Ray? And second, why is this not being released by itself? I already own "The Shadow Chronicles" so why do I have to purchase it again to buy this DVD?

cheap, shitty cash-in. barely worth the dvd its in on.

I'm curious to know what new material was added.
