Morgan Spurlock has covered many important stories through his impacting documentaries in the last nine years. From national obesity issues to the search for Osama Bin Laden, the Academy Award-nominated director has never shied away from tackling whatever issue he sees being of national importance. What’s his latest subject? The latest boy band sensation, One Direction. As if you had to ask.
The 3D motion picture, “One Direction: This Is Us,” has Spurlock chronicling the lives of the five pop stars made famous after their appearance on the British version of “The X Factor.” Appropriately produced by Simon Cowell, the latest trailer for the film once titled “1D3D” is heavy on the emotional toll the young men and their parents experience, but still closes with plenty of quickly cut together concert footage and laughs — including a teacup balancing act that functions as an odd closer for a film seemingly designed to make the famous singers more relatable.
Will Spurlock present a more detailed examination of his subjects than other teen-targeted concert docs like “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience?” We’ll have to wait until August 30 to find out, but check out the new trailer and leave your theories on why Spurlock has set his sights on Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry, and Louis in the comments section.
