Will Smith Shares His ‘After Earth’ Box Office Disappointment – ‘It’s Been 2 Decades Since I Didn’t Have A Movie Open At #1’

Will Smith Shares His 'After Earth' Box Office Disappointment - 'It's Been 2 Decades Since I Didn't Have A Movie Open At #1'

For the average Hollywood actor, a $26.5 million opening weekend box office take for a movie they’re starring in, would probably feel like a gift. But Will Smith isn’t the average Hollywood actor. He’s an international superstar who’s seemingly *transcended* race, with appeal to almost every circle.

So a $26.5 million opening weekend for him is considered a disappointment in the industry. The studio, Sony, was expecting somewhere between high $30s to low $40s, in millions.

His last starring effort, Men in Black 3, opened with a $54,592,779 weekend.

Before that, Seven Pounds opened with $14,851,136.

Hancock, $62,603,879.

I am Legend, $77,211,321.

The Pursuit of Happyness, $26,541,709.

Hitch, $43,142,214.

I, Robot, $52,179,887.

So his last 7 starring films, prior to After Earth, opened to about $45 million on average. Although, in all fairness, we could ask whether After Earth was really a Will Smith movie, or more of a Jaden Smith movie. But I guess either way, it’s a Smith movie, and Will’s name and face were pivotal in how it was marketed and sold to audiences.

Although some have argued that, even though the studio (Sony) erased him from the film’s marketing campaign, word still eventually got around that M. Night Shyamalan was the film’s director. And he isn’t exactly the most loved Hollywood filmmaker working right now. According to Deadline, Will practically insisted on Shyamalan to helm the film. It makes one wonder why he did that, especially when this isn’t quite Shyamalan’s forte. The last time he attempted a sci-fi fantasy adventure film, it was with The Last Airbender, which was ripped by critics and audiences.

And so now, some are starting to wonder if Will’s box office appeal may be beginning to fade a little. I say, as others have said on this blog before, his next few choices are going to be really crucial in answering the question on whether his appeal might be at the beginning of a decline. Several critical and commercial duds in a row could spell danger. Just ask the director of After Earth, Shyamalan.

And with Will recently voicing his desire to take on more “dangerous” edgier roles, who knows what kind of on-screen Will Smith we’ll see next (see Tambay’s post on that HERE).

But don’t cry for Will. He’s done and continues to do very well financially, as one of the highest paid actors in the business, and one of the few whose payment deal structures include collecting a portion on both the front and the back-end. Plus, he’s still immensely popular. He’s still able to work his charm on just about any crowd. He’ll be just fine.

But I’m really looking forward to what he chooses to do next. I think even he is aware of all the chatter about him that’s happening currently, and will be choosy.

In the below interview with Jimmy Kimmel this week, discussing AE’s opening weekend disappointment, Will shares his reaction to the news, calling it a tragic situation. The conversation about the film starts around 2:35 in. But I think the whole clip is funny. Love him or hate him, he handles himself well, and he obviously hasn’t lost his confidence in himself:

No matter how much effort Will Smith chooses to put into his son's movie career, the kid just can't act. There's just no depth for Jaden to draw on. He was born into Hollywood celebrity and hasn't had a tough day in his life. Will Smith came off the streets. He's sassy, street smart, intelligent and just oozes personality and appeal (as the above article states). In short he's box office gold. But his son just isn't and shares none of his father's traits or character. I'm sure he's a nice enough person but he's no better an actor than I am or any of the other millions of plebs wandering around in the general public. The unfortunate thing here is Will Smith is dragging his own 'brand' down by trying to prop Jaden's up. There's plenty of popular actors whose children don't follow them into the acting world who live very successful, normal, well balanced lives. As should you Jaden Smith. Ultimately the measure of his ability would be simply this: Would he have EVER got ANY movie role if Will Smith wasn't his father? The answer, unfortunately, stares anyone in the face on the silver screen should they be foolish enough to pay to watch any movie he's in.

sci-fic is one of my favorites, let alone a movie star who plays her is will smith, traits that are so attractive in every movie that starred

Rob

Get rid of his idiot kid in the film and it may have been good, kid sucks ass.

With all the crazy "name" movies like from Marvel for instance, and glammed up remakes that have wooed moviegoers, it's a wonder why After Earth was lost in the dust. People are so addicted to the same repetitive things, that everyone has to act in a "trademark" fashion, that it's become sickening.
This movie I consider a gem. I've always been a sci-fi/fantasy freak with a plethora of themes, and After Earth was one of those different things I've been seeking. I await a sequel, even if has to come in book form.

It just flabbergasts me the same thing is to be expected over and over, and when something different is done people whine and cry.

Oh, and the extra tidbits on the official movie site were great. How many people actually went there and read through it all? Very insightful about the movie's background storyline. When you don't actually sit down and watch the movie, you're bound to miss a lot.

Sci-fi is my favorite genre, leading me to give a pass to almost any movie with a decent story, and I am a wild Will Smith fan on top of that, defending his most lackluster movies. But this one?

It was just weird. Stiff camera angles, awkward dialogue. Unrecognizable actors (besides the Smiths) who all talked like they had cotton mouth. The first 30 seconds of the film made me cringe. Jayden should never narrate a movie — he's nasally and doesn't have that "I'm a strong, mysterious figure" feel to his voice that you just need to have if you're going to try and tell some epic story.

I think the side-characters had more natural movements than Jayden's character did. I'm not trying to hate on Jayden, but I just don't think sci-fi is his niche. I don't even think acting is what he needs to be doing.

After reading these posts,i decided to take note of something..As a group friends and I were watching a movie on tv last night,i noticed that during the advertisements, whena theatrical movie was being advertised and the selected scenes were being displayed,my friends would react to only the movies with primarily white actors.while the ads for movies with black actor or actors as the lead role, were garnishing no attention or interest whatsoever..ie,an ad for a movie with lead actors being white ,they'd all stop talking momentarily and view the ad for a few seconds and make a emark of some kind in regard to the movie..but when (what some would catagorise as) a black movie was advertised, there was no interest at all shown..this wasn't due to racism as none of my friends are racist, but instead I believe it's normal. Moreover,i think that Will Smith has lost a lot fans in the past few years, many black but most certainly many white(judging by my friends' interest in movies anyway).I noticed a long time ago that as stars get older, the current generation of young people(preteens to 20 somethings)lose interest to a huge degree. This occurred as stars like Patrick Swayze,Tom Hanks,Bill Murray,(just to name a very few)got older ,into their late 40's and,or early 50's.The same goes with recording artists.for example,Barry manilow,Celine Dion,Cher,(and yes)Madonna and even bands as in Evanescence,Flyleaf,etc..Not that the music changes all that much but younger artists and actors come about and today most people in their teens to those in their 20's are very ageist..I see this as mainly an American trait in people however.Europeans don't seem to be as hardcore ageist as most Americans.(I'm American by the way=Dallas Texas.)

I think the movie was GREAT i got so much out of it that I am going to do a Workshop on it, many people are looking at it as an action movie THIS IS A VERY SPIRITUAL MOVIE about a boys journey, a father guiding him HELLO cant you see it … like God or Angels guiding when he sent him out he said i will be with you seeing danger BEFORE it hits, how about the Centering, learning to face Danger and difference in Fear and real Danger HELLO the movie is full of Gifts… i am buying it and i will be doing workshops on it, from the time they took off to when they were saved … THE MOVIE IS FULL too many to post and yes i probably will be writing extensively about it… I also got to see it on Pay per View so i got it in many stages and also had stopped it many times as i shared it with friends already… THANK YOU WILL FOR WRITING THIS AND GETTING THIS OUT… for everyone else look at it with different eyes you shall see…

This is a damn good movie so good they are doing a version with a bunch of white kids now. The graphics were great the storyline was original and the acting was great. Most people who don't like this movie are either SNOBS or racists IMO. They same movie with two white characters would have been the talk of century Oh wait they are ripping off the whole concept with a white cast lets see the reviews for that one

mark

Haven't seen AE or Pursuit. But, of the rest, all but Seven Pounds were fun stuff. Very enjoyable. SP was strictly for those who've got most of their life behind them and have more than a few regrets. The movie is a thought-provoker…and was excellently done.

the phantom critic

I actually paid money to see this sedative in DVD form. Beyond boring. Soporific. Dull. Lackluster.
Sub-par. This movie proves again that wannabes who think sci-fi is easy need to think again. The original story, by Will Smith, could not dramatically get out of a wet bag. ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS beats this by a mile. And that one goes back to the 60s! The monster in this reminded me of Kharis, the mummy. Blind, clumsy, M. Night Shambling along… miraculous it ever gets anyone to eat!
Next time, hire a writer. Or check out some classics of science fiction that are just begging to be filmed.

Coff Mulato

Man… his son is as good in acting as him being a rapper. And there is too much ego in this guy, that is why I classify this actor being lower then average. He is a good actor himself, but he lacks a good personality. His son is not even worth mentioning no more, whatever his name is

Well… your heart was in the right place. You want to teach your son how to hunt? Do it without thinking about your audience and more so about your VISION… if you have any. The "fresh prince" obviously has no imagination- that's why he was so popular with retards (a large portion of Americans) but Will Smith? Well, we're waiting…

Curtis

Will Smith……get over yourself.

Since my husband and I were split from each other for three years, I never thought anything would work. I tried to be positive about this spell because I knew it was real and because of that there would be no negative things that happened, so what did I have to lose? Well actually I had everything to GAIN! My husband has been home now for over a week and he is home for good! The kids are so happy and we are having a renewal of our vows on our anniversary in September. I cannot thank you and your gods enough for helping him to find his way back to us. You are the real angel here Dr. Abu! He is ready to help anyone that comes for help. Contact him via: Ominighospelltemple(at)gmail(dot)com

For the article's writer, After Earth is definitely Jaden Smith's film, not Will Smith's film. Jaden Smith is lead actor. The only real basis for box office comparison is Jaden's only other lead role-The Karate Kid ($$359,091,618 worldwide). Maybe the only actor more popular in Asia than Will Smith is Jackie Chan?

Just for kicks and to provide context, we can throw in Pursuit of Happyness ($306,096,398) and The Day the Earth Stood Still ($233,066,978) in the mix since Jaden has supporting actor screen time in both and then we find that After Earth's box office take lines up in the middle.

But regardless, Will Smith is supporting actor in After Earth. It's not his film. The only reasonable comparisons to After Earth are Smith's other supporting roles-Where the Day Takes You ($390,152), Made in America ($104,942,695), Six Degrees of Separation ($6,284,090), Legend of Bagger Vance ($39,235,486), Jersey Girl ($37,066,129), and Shark Tale ($367,825,111)–again, After Earth's box office at $235,965,668 (and counting) lines up somewhere in the middle.

After Earth is not a failure. It's an average movie with an average return on investment. However, worthy of note is After Earth's successful international run including $30 million from China and what that potential means for other Black leading actors and producers in a science fiction film and reception in the international film industry.

Dead silence from S&A on that.

Jolly Jim

There are two thing bad with celebrity nepotism IMHO. First, is that now that Will Smith is a superstar and is in position to discover other young, up and coming talent, the way he was discovered, instead of looking for the next great struggling actor, Smith uses his fame to thrust his own kids on the world. Maybe in his next movie Smith can star with a talented unknown who is gifted and hungry like Smith was years ago. Maybe open the door for someone not named Smith- Mr. Smith.

Secondly, child stars have their struggles- it's well documented. The Smith kids may be has-beens before they hit age 20 and you have to wonder if they are groomed or prepared to work in other careers that pay a lot less but are in a lot of ways can be more rewarding. I guess that ship has sailed already and even before the kids had a chance to finish high school and discover themselves. Will Smith is a charming and charismatic superstar, following in those footsteps is a lot to put on a kid.

Tony Turko

After Earth is another sanctimonious anti human film. Being lectured by obnoxious, elitist, patronizing, and stupid storyline is quite noticeable. And you wonder why most American moviegoers refuse to have they're intelligence insulted.

Donella

Well, the movie's up to $215 million worldwide, which isn't the disaster many seemed to hope for.

As for the nepotism, that didn't begin with Jaden Smith and Will Smith and it certainly won't end with them.

Robert Downey Jr, Ben Stiller, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Jeff Bridges, Beau Bridges, Michael Douglas, Cameron Douglas, Kyle Eastwood, Peter Fonda, John Huston, Angelica Huston, Colin Hanks, Scott Caan, Jake Busey, Josh Brolin, Josh Ritter, Sophia Coppola, Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, Gwenyth Paltrow, Rumor Willis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carrie Fisher, Emma Roberts, Liv Tyler, Liza Minnelli, Sophia Coppola, Nicolas Cage, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Bridget Fonda, George Clooney, Miguel Ferrer, Lorenzo Lamas, Mamie Gummer, Eva Amurri, Kate Hudson, Kyle Eastwood, Jordan Ladd, Sean Astin, Mackenzie Astin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kiefer Sutherland, and Miley Cyrus.

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of names I missed.

Nerissa

Listen people, "Take a knee" I like it and my kids liked it which is all that matters.

Pamela

I thought this was a fantastic film.

Jenny

This movie was so bad its hard to describe. The whole movie was like watching Smith tell everyone this is my kid. Did I tell you about the time I did a movie with my kid? It was boring over acted and a complete waste of time.

jim

I thought this was the worst movie, well maybe just behind Admission with Tina Fey. These had to be the two worst POS movies hoisted on the public since Ed Wood. Just total crap. Only the blind who would follow their chosen idol would stand with this crap.

ftw

You people are idiots. After Earth was a great movie.

Donella

Well, After Earth is up to $145.3 million worldwide now after its second week. The rest will depend mostly on Japan and China when it gets released there. It's shaping up to perform similar numbers to Tom Cruise's Oblivion.

domingo

the thing is Jaden smith is a terrible actor …but if he was white the expectation would be
lower and I really dont want to pull the race card but lets be real, 81% of hollywood create
movies that cater "non-minority" stories,fables,myths,history etc .

Todd Manning

Nobody is saying or writing the most obvious reason this filmed bombed. It's not Will Smith or M Knight, it's Jaden Smith! We know he is Will's son and so he is going to get movie roles, but he is a horrible actor who screws up every movie he's in.

Ranita

I haven't seen this yet, but plan to. I think they were trying to cater to the teen crowd with Jaden, but they likely made the storyline too complex for the target audience. They should have made the storyline simpler, perhaps made it more of a PG flick – or kept the complex storyline, and geared it more towards adults.

James Gowan

You're right… it is a Jaden film. I couldn't care less about him. I like PURSUIT alright but that was still Will's movie that his son happened to be in. But the death knell for whether or not I would see this film was when I saw Shyamalan's name attached to it. DONE. No money from me. I have had too much money stolen by that one-hit wonder. Sixth Sense was a good movie, but I have hated everything since then (with the exception of The Village).

Jaden is ok. I thought he was fine in Karate Kid (I have a 9 yr old) but a SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER doesn't need to reek of nepotism.

Will, if you want to have another hit, it needs to be YOUR face on the poster and a decent director that is respected in the industry.

CC

To all the supporters and sympathisers of white prejudice and bigotry, I present the most significant comment in this thread:

"Don't know whats more pathetic, the man urinating on you and telling you it's rain, or the one being urinated on telling you it's rain." ~ TONTON MICHEL

And more pathetic are those black folks standing on the sidelines saying "it sho is rain, so be still and open your mouth and take a drink. We have and it's good".

Donella

It will debut in Australia, Mexico, and Japan later this month. I wonder why there are no release dates on the entire continent of Africa, unless I missed them.

Chantel Hoheb

I think this movie coming in at #3 did affect him a bit but Will is NOT worried. He is a one of a kind person and actor and he'll be back at #1 soon enough. Personally I've always preferred to see how a film does over time as opposed to what it makes in the first week. After a week, you start hearing what your friends and family thought and then you may or may not decide to go to the theater to see it. If you decide to go after some good reviews I think it's more than likely a good film and people aren't just flocking to the movies because of the star.

Now there comes a time when there are certain people you KNOW will pick good movies to be a part of so people will automatically head to the theatre once those films debut. In that line of thinking I'm curious as to why not as many people went to see After Earth. Maybe they felt it would be part II of "Pursuit of Happiness" with cool gadgets and an older Jayden…

Blackseed

I think some people are taking After Earth way too serious. Some people like it some people don't. It's that simple, or at least it should be. This film is not even worth it.

sharongee

Gosh…this movie is not THAT tragic! I heard of many tweens who loved the film. Some of my co-workers went to take their kids to see it for Jaden and they loved it! Maybe they should have marketed it for the tweens for Jaden and not so much for Will. I have to admit i was a little bored with the pace of the movie. Remarkably the kids were into it… they think little Jaden did his thing. The kids loved it!

steve

Who cares! he is an old actor whos core audience does not go to the cimea anymore as they are too busy with there real lives children and getting married. A new young top gun will now replace him. as soon as the studios figure out who is now going to get bums on seats in the cinema they will stop hiring him. Thats it nothing to do with race type of film working with his children or any of that pchyo ins and outs. Its simple poularity and economics….

dee

I would like to see more than sci-fi movies from him, its getting a bit old? Never even considered to see this movie. People are not going to be excited if its something they always see from you. IJS.

Nadia

Damn, step away for a minute and there's like 30 more comments since. Lol. But is this film really worth all this debate? I mean, seriously, it's a not a good film. It has nothing to do with the fact that Will is black, or that it was a majority black cast. Even if the biggest white actors were starring in it, it would still be a poor film. But it's prolly going to make twice its money overseas anyway. I'm not worried about Will or his family. They'll be just fine.

BluTopaz

lol @ all the armchair psychologists analyzing why folks don't want to see a watch Jaden carry a movie. The few interviews I've seen with this kid, he is extraordinarily obnoxious. Yes you could say all teens are, so what's the crime in not wanting to watch one carry a movie?

Ask yourself why Zoe Kravitz hasn't received the same reaction in her lead role in Yelling at the Sky–no that is an indie film and not a multimillion dollar blockbuster. It also is not a vehicle directed by a notoriously crappy director, and it was not written and produced by Zoe's celebrity father to prop her up as a megastar. Zoe is getting out there and auditioning, people respect that. Some Black people need to stop trying to find the racist boogeyman everywhere. Vivica Fox gave an interview where she said Will advised her years ago to become 'colorless'–I doubt that he is sitting back now and wondering if his critics are seeing his color now.

Donella

After Earth opened #1 in France, UK, Russia, and The Philipines. So far, it's made $45 million overseas. There are still additional world releases to come.

I think Hiveship99 needs to WARP drive back home with his own kind, the green with envy klan.

Every A list superstar has a bomb nobody is immune, but it does seem to me the media have a problem with the Smiths. People keep on insisting on this board it is clearly about critics not liking the film. But I sense Hollywood doesn't really like powerful black people like Will Smith who doesn't "stay in his lane." Tyler Perry also gets the same kind of hate because he does whatever the hell he feels like and makes bank at the box office. Since Will stepped out of his box with After Earth, I wonder if he's going to go back to staying in his lane and be the happy Oreo for Hollywood?

NO BRAINER

Suddenly it's all M. Night Shyamalan's fault? Didn't Will Smith read the script? Actors act like they cannot tell if a movie is going to bad after reading the script. Actually, but few can… George Clooney is one, Daniel Day Lewis, Meryl Streep… Such an ability separates the superstars from the legends. You can make a bad movie out of a good script but you cannot make a good movie out of a bad script.

Aaron

All of the bad reviews used to turn people off from watching is just propaganda of the hollywood system of "One N!gga At A Time." Even Macklessonsradio made a post about it. Nothing new in an industry dominated by white people.

I know it's the weekend dollar amount that's most important for studios, but from my perspective, the mantra that will be the undercurrent for courage and persistence, tenacity and power will be: DANGER IS REAL, FEAR IS CHOSEN. I took all three of my grandsons to see this film…so Will Smith, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!!
Much Love, S&A!!!

Mel

Sorry the expense of the movie will not be covered from the box office returns. But for me I am thrilled I wasn't compelled to go spend my hard-earned $20+ to see a movie that most critics and movie goers panned. I will be perfectly happy to wait and see it when it comes out on Netflix. I will have very low expectations, hence, I will enjoy it without reservation.

ALM

He'll be fine. He could retire at this point if he wanted to.

Floyd Webb

I saw the movie. For me, it pretty much sucked.
Others may find something redeeming in it. I did not. After 7 films at 45 million, he can take a lil box office hiccup. Trying to make his son a star, well he could grow into a beautiful dean of an actor. But right now, it is ugly duckling time.

It is like Tiger Woods losing a game and my white liberal friends gloating over it. I just say. One lose doe not undo a championship career.

This will pass for Mr Smith with lesson learned.
Opening weekend of $26 mil??? cry me a river.
$26 mil pays a lot of people's salaries. House notes, Porsche payments and LAS VEGAs chicken ranch Tabs.

Will ain't hurting behind this debacle.

The problem is obvious, just like it doesn't pay for black male actors to be paired up with black female leads it doesn't work to cast opposite you even if he is your son. He should of got a little Asian boy.

Ava

If there will be a future article one Black directors we'd like to see Will Smith work with, I hope there will be some 'Sistas' on the list as well:
Kasi Lemons
Ava Duvernay
Victoria Mahoney
Julie Dash

…to name a few.

jpfilmz

This movie was actually good. I'm very glad that Will to it made. I don't know what people here are moaning and groaning about….well actually I do. It's just like Tariq Nasheed said about this film…in hollywood there is a "One Ni**a At A Time" clause and having 2 black men on screen working together was to much.

correction…*are far up…*

@ James…thank you, thank you and thank you once again! I' am so tired of all of the Smiths. All of their heads a far up one another ass!

James

Good. I'm glad it's a "disappointment". Honestly, the only disappointment is that Will Smith's head is so far up his ass that 26.5 million isn't considered "enough". Fucking disgusting what's become of this industry and the talent we overpay. My theory, which is the most logical, is once you have a box office failure, your rate of pay should go down. We're paying these people whose names are "going to fill the seats up" when their presence doesn't fill up the seats! (Also see Tom Cruise). Now, I don't know about you, but I think that sounds like we aren't getting what we pay for. How bad do things have to get before salaries like these bankrupt the industry (which is already in debt, trust me). You guys can blame Shyamalan but don't forget to blame Mr. Smith. Any actor who passes on a Tarantino film because "the part isn't big enough" clearly isn't in Hollywood to improve on his acting abilities.

Dr.V

I liked the movie. But M.N Shyamalan as the director was a TRUE "miss"…

tyler4all

Love Will Smith but what was he thinking picking M. Night Shyamalan? his fault, really.

Monique. Williams

Even when he loses, he comes across as a winner. Gotta love that Will Smith!
But…M. Night? Never again. Ugh!

Ben Je

We all have bad days Will…
