Amy Nicholson Hired as Full-Time Film Critic at LA Weekly

Earlier this year, when Box Office Magazine opted to drop its review coverage, Matt finished his post by saying, “Just because a site has given up on film criticism doesn’t mean we have to give up on its critics.” Well, thankfully, another one of those talented writers has found a new home for their work.

Yesterday came word that Los Angeles-based critic Amy Nicholson has been hired full-time at LA Weekly. For all the changeover in the landscape of print-based critics, these are the types of stories we love to share. Her reviews will appear not only in the online and in the free print version of LA Weekly, but also in the other Voice Media Group papers around the country. She’ll be working alongside Village Voice chief film critic Stephanie Zacharek, who began at that position back at the end of April.

For those unfamiliar with Amy’s work, she’s had a long-running history with a number of outlets, including Indiewire. Her LA Weekly archive includes pieces she’s written for the publication over the past seven years, including her recent cover story on Joss Whedon for the release of “Much Ado About Nothing” and a number of theatrical reviews.

On top of all this? She just finished a book about Tom Cruise. Here’s hoping her tenure at LA Weekly is a lengthy and fruitful one. (And that we’re able to share more of this kind of news in the immediate future.)
