Claire Danes Almost Quit Acting Due to Lack of Good Female Roles

In the August issue of Vogue, Claire Danes talks at length about her family, playing Carrie Mathison on Homeland and her preparation for that role.

The big news is that after receiving critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for playing Temple Grandin, she couldn’t find work. For nearly two years, Danes couldn’t find any roles which weren’t “the girl.” At that point, Danes said she almost considered changing careers because she couldn’t deal with the lack of good work.

It was confusing. I got a lot of plaudits, and it didn’t translate into more work. I was really, really struggling during that time. It was grim. I was
very hurt. Two years of not working was brutal. And a point came where I thought, I really like interior design. Someone suggested, ‘Maybe your real
success is in your personal life.’

Lucky for us, soon after, Danes nabbed her career changing role on Homeland. But Danes’ struggle to find a great role is a true testament to how much more we need complex female roles out there.

In the real world there is a glass ceiling and too many of us forget that it exists. We need to break the glass and all be on the same level. No one should criticize Ms. Daines for her yearning to be known for her acting skills. Too often women in movies are given a role because of the objectification they are willing to allow themselves to be put through. Daines wants more than male gaze to carry her legacy; we should find that as invigorating and as viewers demand more of producers and movie writers to show women in lead roles based on their talent of conveying a clear portrayal of a character's emotions, background, and beliefs. Don't look to put Daines in a box, we should hope more women and little girls follow her lead to demand equal opportunity in this wicked world we live in.

One word… PRODUCE!!! If you aren't thrown the role of your dreams, find one. Adapt a book, find a good writer… create the opportunity to shine on a platform that you choose… sheesh. I can't believe that someone with her connections and star power doesn't know this already.

Not a good actress, we had not missed anything without her in the film industry.
