Los Angeles-based non-profit Film Independent, the organization responsible for the Independent Spirit Awards, has taken its cues from two leaders over the past year and a half. Now that position has been reduced by half: Film Independent announced today that co-president Sean Mc Manus will be vacating the position, leaving Josh Welsh as the organization’s sole president.
In a statement released today, Film Independent’s Board Chair Mary Sweeney praised Mc Manus for his 15 years of work at the organization, where he began as Director of Development before segueing into the role of co-president 18 months ago. “His skills, determination and signature enthusiasm have been instrumental in the tremendous growth of Film Independent during those years,” Sweeney said. “We are deeply grateful to him for all his contributions, and he shall be missed. We know that he will move on to even greater accomplishments, and he has the continued full support of the Film Independent Staff and Board of Directors.”
In his own statement, Mc Manus said that he began to consider leaving the organization after the close of the Los Angeles Film Festival last month. “It felt like a natural time to look ahead and I’ve realized that this is the perfect time to make a change in my own life,” he said. “My immediate plans are to take the next few months off and explore some options.”
