Jake Gyllenhaal Exits ‘Into The Woods’ To Climb ‘Everest’ And Report On ‘Nightcrawler’

Jake Gyllenhaal Exits 'Into The Woods' To Climb 'Everest' And Report On 'Nightcrawler'

Wow, it’s been a busy night for Jake Gyllenhaal and his publicist must have been working overtime. But to keep things simple, we’re just going to roll all this Gyllenews into one quick rundown that will hopefully bring you up to speed on what’s going on with the actor.

But before we get to the things he is doing, here’s something he’s not: Disney‘s mega musical “Into The Woods.” The actor, who was set to play one of a pair of princes (the other is Chris Pine) who romances Rapunzel and Cinderella, has been forced to bow out due to scheduling conflicts (you’ll soon understand why). But no offense to Gyllenhaal, with Rob Marshall‘s film stacked with Johnny DeppMeryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, James Corden and Emily Blunt, they’ll probably survive his absence.

So what is Gyllenhaal doing with his time? Well, this fall he’ll be shooting two movies. First up in October is “Nightcrawler,” which isn’t a superhero movie, but the directorial debut of writer Dan Gilroy (“The Bourne Legacy,” “Real Steel“). The actor signed on to the project this past spring, and the movie now has a greenlight, and will find him playing  a driven young man who discovers the nocturnal world of freelance crime journalism in Los Angeles. Robert Elswit will work his magic behind the camera.

Then in November, Gyllenhaal will join Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jason Clarke in “Contraband” and “2 Guns” director Baltasar Kormakur‘s “Everest.” The project seems to have lost Christian Bale, who has originally attached, but this cast is still pretty bro-tacular.  Penned by newcomer Justin Isbell, the movie will tell the true story of the 1996 expedition up the famed mountain, when a storm hit mid-climb and eight explorers lost their lives.

So there’s your Gyllenhaal update and what he’s doing for the rest of the year. And don’t forget, the dude has two movies already in the can: “Prisoners” hitting theatres this fall and “An Enemy” which we assume will be on the festival circuit. [The Wrap/Deadline]

From THR:

"Clarke, who starred in Zero Dark Thirty, would play Rob Hall, a New Zealander who is leading one of the expeditions. Christian Bale had at one time been in talks for the role. Brolin, who next stars in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, would play Beck Weathers, a doctor who has to endure a night exposed to the elements. End of Watch star Gyllenhaal will play Scott Fischer, the leader of another expedition. Hawkes, who starred in The Sessions, will take on the role of a slow climber from Seattle who causes his expedition to be late in taking off."

So who's playing Krakauer??

Where do we put in our petition for Jeremy Jordan to take over for Cinderella's Prince? They only just finished filming The Last 5 Years together, and I'm already dying for he and Anna to work together again.
