As I’ve said before, regardless of what you might still think of BET, the network is certainly doing what it can to demonstrate a genuine desire to completely shift public perception, given its recent original content push, and aggressive moves to acquire popular content (like its recent Scandal syndication deal).
This is ontop of the existing development deal that the network has with Team-Akil (Mara Brock and Salim), which has already been fruitful for BET.
Humor Mill adds that the deal with Chestnut includes a starring vehicle for the actor, in a show that he will also develop, as well as his developing other new projects for the network.
Chestnut is certainly no stranger to TV, most recently appearing in 10 episode of Showtime’s drama series Nurse Jackie, playing Dr. Ike Prentiss.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that he’s making moves behind the camera also, as he stated in a recent interview with South African news site, Independent Online, discussing his starring in and producing a feature film titled Asylum Down, in which he will play “a reluctant heir to the gold and platinum reserves owned by a modern-day African royal family, who takes over the land and pushes it into the ruthless world markets, which could be to the family’s detriment.“
“I am venturing into doing more things behind the camera. I don’t want to be director, I enjoy just bringing projects together. You know, in America I have sold a couple of television shows. None of them have aired yet. I will probably get a few projects as a producer so that is my next step in Hollywood.”
He was a producer on Not Easily Broken, by the way, which he starred in with Taraji P. Henson.
Up next for Chestnut is the upcoming sequel to The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday.
No word yet on what else we can expect from this new deal with BET.
