Spike Lee Says He Has A Script For 'School Daze' Sequel Set 25 Years Later

I had the script for [the sequel] to School Daze… a contemporary version, same school… 25 years later. Hopefully I can get Laurence Fishburne to play Dap… he’ll be the president now of the school. It would deal with issues in HSBCUs today… some of the same stuff from the last film… like the pledging process… but also lots of new stuff… like homophobia… it’s a big subject in it… class issues, color, hair texture… but it’s stuff happening today.

Words from Spike Lee, live in conversation with the Black&Sexy TV crew on Saturday night, during which he talked primarily about his mystery new project, which he’s financing via Kickstarter- a campaign that’s raised, as of the time of this post, just over $355,000, with 23 days to go to raise $1.25 million.

The entire conversation is embedded in the video player below, so feel free to listen to it.

As for a sequel to School Daze… while not exactly something I’d be immediately high on, I’d certainly be curious.

I actually think School Daze has the potential to be a great Broadway show, especially as we’re starting to see more adaptations of Hollywood films on Broadway (and vice-versa). The film itself had a theatricality to its staging, with the musical numbers and step sequences. I think it’s a near-perfect fit actually.

But I wouldn’t hold my breath for a sequel to the 1988 film. Spike likely wouldn’t be able to get the money for it. He can’t get money to do much else – specifically, his own personal projects.

Here’s the Black&Sexy TV conversation. The School Daze revelation comes at around the 10-minute mark:

I would love to see the remake, I just want the full NPHC to be depicted within the film. All 9 orgs. Also, address whites joining NPHC orgs and how they are affected, what they hear from they're parents. But more than anything else division amongst the orgs need to be highlighted.

Mr. or Ms. Tambay Obenson, you're level of sideways hate towards Spike is corny and not clever. Nobody asked your opinion about the School Daze sequel or your silly potshot about Spike's film funding. Unless you're making the next superhero flick, everybody's having more problems getting cash to film indie projects, ask Steven Soderbergh of near billion dollar grossing franchise Ocean's 11-13 and Oscar-winning Traffic who's also WHITE. Ms./Mr. T.O. just present the video and save your wack critique for the next Tyler Perry masterpiece (you probably love those).

Jordin Sparks could play a character similar to Tisha Campbell's character from the first movie.

School Daze would make a great broadway show. I would get a ticket to see School Daze on broadway. I would even be interested in seeing a School Daze set 25 years later with a new generation of actors

What kind of journalism is this?

It would be interesting to see that actual G Phi G(groove phi groove SFI) and not fictional version.

I'm TIRED of remakes… Stomp the yard redid this Spike… NO SEQUELS … Just something NEW… Admit if the creativity is at writers block!

It's HBCU, not HSBCU… Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

It's always the mediocre talent who feel it necessary to flood the market with product in attempts to maintain relevancy within the consumers eye. True talent is unforgettable.

There are waaaaaaay too many cooks on this "show" (Black and Sexy) and I'm using the word loosely. It doesn't take 10 people to interview one individual. I'm just taking a look at the replay and it's completely chaotic and unwatchable. After two minutes, I was done.

But I wish Spike all the best.

it would be interesting to see him work with the ORIGINAL G-PHI-G
(Groove Phi Groove SFI)

Girl, you did not need to constantly interrupt the flow of the conversation to shout, "WE GOT TWO MORE BAKERS!!!" . . . .so irritating. . . .

and what happened to the live feed. . . .I went to Youtube and it was not on at the appointed time?
