Trailer of the Week: Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange in the First Trailer of Wikileaks Movie 'The Fifth Estate'

Before We Saw the Trailer We Thought: WikiLeaks + Cumberbatch = tickets on opening night. It also helps that Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) is behind the camera, especially now that he’s done with his “Twilight” phase, and the rest of the cast ain’t too shabby either. Stanley Tucci (who has taken over for Nicolas Cage as the actor in everything), Laura Linney (!), Anthony Mackie, David Thewlis, and Peter Capaldi round out the excellent ensemble assembled to tell WikiLeaks’ origin story. Early shots of Cumberbatch’s bleached hairdo may be the only slight against this highly-anticipated Oscar contender.

And Now? It certainly looks like a contender. The pulse-pounding score, high drama, and globally-known subjects all lend “The Fifth Estate” an air of importance it can carry all the way to the Dolby. Cumberbatch will certainly draw his legion of internet fans, and any leftover geeks will certainly be drawn in by the promise of inside access to Julian Assange and Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

The film is scheduled for an October 11 release in the States, but we expect to see it on the festival circuit in September. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you think “The Fifth Estate” has what it takes to earn Oscars.

And Cumberbatch, a good job witht he voice? Seriously? Have you actually heard Assange speak?

Is Indiewire paid to promote these studio films in post after post?

Julian Assange: 'A Mass Propaganda Attack. …[The Fifth Estate] is not just an attack against us. It is an attack on Iran. It fans the flames to start a war with Iran.'

Entertaining trailer and I'll certainly go see it. Cumberbatch does a very good job of Assange's peculiar accent.

I got chills from the trailer. Looks promising!
