Trailers from Hell: Josh Olson on 'Barfly,' Starring Mickey Rourke

Dipsomania Week! kicks off at Trailers from Hell with screenwriter Josh Olson introducing Barbet Schroeder’s “Barfly,” starring Mickey Rourke.

Rourke’s booze-soaked lead role in poet Charles
Bukowski’s semi-autobiographical bar-crawling memoir was first offered to Sean
Penn, who wanted Dennis Hopper to direct, but the script had been commissioned
by French director Schroeder, so he ended up directing it as one of the
rare Cannon Film productions to play the Cannes Film Festival.

I remember reading Ham and Rye by Charles Bukowski, which I think the film is taken from.
