“Adore,” the controversial new film from French director Anne Fontaine starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright, has a scandalous new trailer. Originally titled “Two Mothers” when it debuted at Sundance, this is an erotic drama about two lifelong friends who develop a dangerous attraction to each other’s arrestingly beautiful sons.
Set in a lush Australian seaside town, “Adore” received mixed reviews upon its Sundance premiere, undoubtedly due to its potentially icky subject. But Screen International deems it “a thoughtful, sexy, and nonjudgmental examination of potentially tawdry material.” Making her English language debut, director Fontaine previously helmed the 2009 biopic “Coco Before Chanel” starring Audrey Tautou. (TOH interviewed Fontaine and Isabelle Huppert for “My Worst Nightmare.”) Adapted from a novella by Doris Lessing, “Adore” was written by Oscar-winning scribe Christopher Hampton (the dark, sexy 1988 “Dangerous Liaisons), known for his exquisite literary adaptations including “Atonement” and “A Dangerous Method.” It’s worth noting that “Adore” was shot in 35mm Cinemascope.
Watch the trailer below and look out for the film when it hits theaters and VOD on September 6, via Exclusive Media.
