The BFI London Film Festival announced today their 57th event will open with Paul Greengrass’ “Captain Phillips.” Starring Tom Hanks as the titular captain whose vessel is threatened by Somali Pirates, the true story is expected to be a major player this awards season. Both Greengrass and Hanks are expected to attend the festival in October.
“We are thrilled to be opening the BFI London Film Festival by welcoming Paul Greengrass – one of the great supporters of the BFI and British film – back to London for the European premiere of ‘Captain Phillips,'” said Clare Stewart, BFI Head of Exhibition and Festival Director. “‘Captain Phillips’ is an intense, high-stakes drama, focusing on two men forced onto a collision course by global political forces much larger than themselves.”
The Opening Night Gala will take place on Wednesday, October 9, and the festival will run through October 20. The full slate of films will be announced September 4.
