Casting Watch: Kirsten Dunst Joins Jeff Nichols' Superpower Thriller 'Midnight Special,' with Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton

Kirsten Dunst has won the female lead in Jeff Nichols
latest, “Midnight Special,” being produced by Warner Bros. Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon, who
was directed by Nichols in both “Take Shelter” and “Mud,” are also set to star.

Per Deadline, the film follows a father and his eight-year-old
boy who must go on the run when it becomes apparent that the child has superhero-like
powers. Nichols penned the script.

No details yet on Dunst’s character. As pointed out at
, the actress hasn’t returned to the realm of superpowers/superheroes since “Spider
Man 3” in 2007. She was last seen in VOD hit “Bachelorette,” John Salles’ “On
the Road” adaptation and in 2011 in Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia.” In the
pipeline she’s got the “Anchorman” sequel, as well as Patricia Highsmith
adaptation “The Two Faces of January,” co-starring Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac.

Shannon was most recently seen fighting Kal-El’s superhuman
strength in Zack Snyder’s Warners hit “Man of Steel.”
