'Comics Undressed' Will Address White Male-Dominated Comics/Film Industry (Fundraising)

Here’s a campaign worth contributing to, in light of much of the ongoing conversation about the lack of diverse representation in the comic book/graphic novel space, and the movies that are made from them.

A documentary, titled Comics Undressed, from Fran Syass and Lindsey Smith shot Chicago about economic, gender-based, and racial representation in the comics industry.

Comics, heralded as a white heterosexual masculine medium, has in fact a diverse range of contributors, many of whom are women, non-white, and/or do not conform to the binary constructs of sexual or gender identity. However, such voices often go unrecognized or are demeaned in mainstream media. Moreover, the lack of equal economic opportunities for a wide range of creators stifles the output of our culturally diverse society, which in turn is reflected in negative or absent portrayals of women, queers, and people of color in the content of the medium itself.

The campaign is seeking $15,000.

When I first shared this campaign here on Wednesday, it had raised just over $8,600, with 4 days left to go, needing about $6,400 contributed by the campaign’ deadline.

3 days since that post, I’m glad to see that an additional almost $5,000 has been contributed to the campaign, bringing its total to just over $13,400. So it needs an another $1,600 to reach its goal by tomorrow, Sunday, August 18, at 1pm.

Can it be done? Of course it can! Let’s make it happen!

I’ve made my own small contribution.
