Entertainment One has set Princess Diana biopic “Diana” for a November 1st limited release, with expansion in the following weeks.
Starring two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (clearly hoping for a third here), the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed film looks at the last two years of Diana’s life and her relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat
Khan (Naveen Andrews). The film comes from a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys, inspired by the book “Diana:
Her Last Love,” by Kate Snell.
As described by EOne: “The film is a window into the tumultuous, change-filled
period from 1995-1997 in the wake of Diana’s shattering divorce from
Prince Charles and at the moment when she stood on the cusp of a
different life, evolving into a global humanitarian, mastering her fame
and becoming her own woman.”
If in contention, Watts’ performance could have her competing against her longtime friend Nicole Kidman, who is also playing a famous princess in “Grace of Monaco,” which is being release four weeks later by The Weinstein Company. It opens September 20th in the UK.
