Slave Uprising Action-Drama 'Tula, The Revolt' Will Close Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival

The upcoming slave uprising film, Tula, The Revolt, from Dutch director Jeroen Leinderswill close this year’s trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff), screening on October 1.

Based on the true story of the slave uprising on the island of Curacao, a Dutch colony in 1795, and the man called Tula, who stood up against his oppressors, and led the revolt that would last about a month, Danny Glover leads a pack of international actors in the film’s cast that also includes Obi AbiliJeroen Krabbé,Derek de LintHenriette Tol and Barry Hay

Obi Abili (a UK actor of Nigerian decent) stars in the film as the titular Tula, while Glover plays Shinishi, the elder of the group.

The film premiered in the Netherlands and later screened in Curaçao, in honor of the 150 year anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the island of Curacao (1863).

Inspire Pictures co-produced the film, which will be distributed by Benelux Film Distributors. No USA playdates yet.

The film was shot last year in Curacao at actual locations where the real uprising occurred, giving an authenticity to it, which was important to the filmmakers.

Founded in 2006, the ttff is an annual celebration of films from and about Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and its diaspora. The Festival is presented by Flow and given leading sponsorship by RBC Royal Bank, bpTT, The Trinidad and Tobago Film Company and the Ministry of Tourism. The ttff/13 takes place from 17 September–01 October.

I would love to see this movie. I hope it comes out on DVD so I can buy it. I'm always curious to know the experience of Blacks throughout the Diaspora. This Tula person seems akin to our own Nat Turner.
