The New York City mayoral race may be in full swing, but it’s not just the candidates who deserve our full attention. Katherine Oliver, who serves as Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, will be singled out as the recipient of the Industry Tribute at the 2013 Gotham Awards. Presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project and held on December 2 at Cipriani Wall Street, the Gotham Awards serve as the official kick off to an always crowded fall awards slate. The Industry Tribute is one of three tributes dispersed to film community icons at the ceremony. They also hand out seven competitive awards, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
The Industry Tribute is awarded annually to a career veteran who has significantly influenced the motion picture industry. Oliver has overseen all film, TV, and digital production in the city since 2002. She’s created initiatives to bolster the local film industry and make shooting in the city more cost effective. One highlight of this was the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment’s “Made in NY” Marketing Credit, a stimulus making New York City the only city to provide free advertising in subway cards, spots on Taxi-TV, and bus shelters to qualified productions. She also helped develop the “Made in NY” Production Assistant Training Program as well as other workforce development efforts.
“We are honored to dedicate our 2013 Gotham Industry Tribute to Katherine Oliver, who has made an indelible impact in the entertainment industry in New York City and beyond. Through her work, she has supported the production of thousands of film, TV, and digital projects, furthermore bolstering the community of filmmakers and digital content creators in New York City,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director of the IFP. “A true Gotham native, Katherine embodies an impressive breadth of work and a long list of achievements that we are proud to celebrate.”
Past recipients of the award have included Roger Ebert, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, David Cronenberg, Spike Lee, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, and Bob & Harvey Weinstein. Nominees for the Gotham Awards competitive categories will be announced on October 24.
