Before We Saw the Trailer, We Thought: For months now, photos have been circulating from the set of “Dallas Buyers Club,” showcasing a clearly committed Matthew McConaughey, who lost a reported 47-pounds to play real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose hard-partying life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Snubbed last year despite some of the best reviews of his career for “Magic Mike,” “Bernie” and “Killer Joe,” McConaughey has his best shot ever at nabbing an Oscar nomination for this film, should it go over well with critics and audiences.
And Now? Based on this powerful and promising preview, McConaughey stands a solid shot at netting that ever elusive nom, as does his co-star Jared Leto, who plays a fellow HIV patient, and went to similar physical extremes for the role.
Directed by “Young Victoria” helmer Jean-Marc Vallée, “Dallas Buyers Club” centers on Woodroof, who after being told he has 30 days to live, takes matters into his own hands and tracks down alternative treatments by means both legal and illegal. Jennifer Garner shows up as a doctor, and judging by the trailer, love interest.
The film world premieres at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival and opens via Focus Features on November 1. Watch the trailer below:
