Now in its fifth edition, the Film London Jarman Award
continues to offer funding and exposure to up-and-coming talent in the U.K. The mission of this young program is to exalt
and promote the use of the moving image in non-conventional ways that break the
boundaries of what cinema can be. Assertively named after the late experimental
filmmaker Derek Jarman, who was known for utilizing the medium to create abstract pieces that reflected his particular artistic sensitivities, the awards are an ideal platform for aspiring creators working outside the mainstream parameters.
Last month 10 finalists were chosen among all the participant entries to be part of the touring program leading up to the award ceremony on November 6 at Whitechapel Gallery in London. The selected filmmakers and video artists represent a varied mix of interests whose commonality is their passion for creating unique content unconcerned with the norm. Such guiding principles go hand in hand with Jarman’s own oeuvre. This celebration of the arts is specially relevant as it follows this year’s earlier commemorations for the 20th anniversary of the visionary’s death.
The aforementioned nationwide tour of the shortlisted talent will run from September to October at venues such as FACT, Liverpool, CCA, Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary and the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle. This is a great opportunity for the general public to take a look at these new voices of British film, and see for themselves why the prestigious judges chose these pieces.
The artist whose work is chosen as the best among the pack will receive £10, 000 and will be commissioned a short-format film project for the UK’s Channel 4 to kickstart his/her career.
