WATCH: Charming 'Daily Show' Host John Oliver on Charlie Rose -- "My Responsibility Was Not to Destroy the Machine in 3 Months"

A star is born. Brit John Oliver has scored good reviews as he’s filled in over the summer on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show.” (Stewart has been occupied directing his first feature, “Rosewater.”) On the August 12 airing of “Charlie Rose,” Oliver came off as humble
and self-effacing as he explained the inner workings of the
show, the well-running machine — “finely tuned by Stewart” —  and how it gets to be a finished project every week.

Oliver, usually the Senior British Correspondent for the show, notes the one time he felt the audience was specifically looking to Stewart’s guidance was the day of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting and killing of teen Trayvon Martin (watch Oliver’s hilarious yet appropriate handling of the news below). He felt he wasn’t who the audience was looking for. Also, more humorously, as a Brit he’s not trained for talking at length to other human beings. He’s been trying not to read the online commentary — Stewart warned him to ignore the chatter.

His final episode as host is August 15.
