1st Trailer For ‘Robocop’ Reboot (Samuel L. Jackson, Michael K. Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste)

1st Trailer For 'Robocop' Reboot (Samuel L. Jackson, Michael K. Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste)

Samuel L. Jackson, Michael K. Williams and Marianne Jean-Baptiste are all co-starring in MGM’s upcoming reboot of Robocop, helmed by Brazilian director Jose Padilha (probably best know for Elite Squad, and its sequel).

Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) stars as the title character, and Gary Oldman will play the mad scientist who created him.

Jackson plays a character named Pat Novak, a charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world; Williams plays Robocop’s partner; and Jean-Baptiste is Police Chief Karen Dean.

Its official synopsis reads:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

This isn’t a film that I have any interest in seeing. The original Robocop franchise was enough for me. And the trailer below doesn’t sell me on this reboot at all. Another mega-budgeted Hollywood studio failure.

SPOILER: I should also note that, based on what we see here, it looks like Michael K. Williams’ character likely makes an early exit.

You just KNEW it was going to happen. Robocop just got a PG-13 rating. Stick with the Verhoeven original

I was too young to truly appreciate the original and its layers but this trailer looked interesting to me. I would watch it. I may even enjoy it.

Why would you kill off Michael Kenneth Williams character? He's only Murphy's partner, don't even get me started on changing that from a female to male role but I like MKW so I'll roll with it. But to kill him off and then change Murphy's iconic death scene GTFOH!

And why is Jackson imitating Al Sharpton's look?

Looks like an incredibly DUMBED DOWN reboot. What made the original interesting was that you had a machine who slowly comes to realize that he's actually a man. This was a major character arc in the original. Based on the trailer, that conflict has been completely done away with. The original RC even sounded like a robot, adding to the conflict of the machine coming to terms with his manhood. All gone here, from the looks of it. This new guy seems to know from jump that he's a man in a suit. And Murphy's gruesome death scene in the original instantly garnered sympathy for the character. Versus a car bomb? Really? Looks extremely dumbed down for today's audience.

Lame. They changed Murphy's iconic, hilariously gratuitous death in the original to a boring car bomb. Bye, hilarious, glorious over-the-top violence and satire. Hello, "serious," "gritty" (PG-13) "realism" and shaky-cam.

Watch there's going to be none of the satircal undertones or over the top violence that were in Paul Verhoeven's orginal film or even Irvin Kershner's Robocop II. This is film will be slick but totally forgettable. They're going to screw this up just like that lousy remake last year of Verhoeven's far better original Total Recall.

Leave Verhoeven's films alone!

hhmmmm….I like the guy from the Killing and this didnt look as bad as I was expecting. Its kind of relivent with its Military Industrial Complex storyline.
