2013 Emmy Predictions: The Comedy Categories

2013 Emmy Predictions: The Comedy Categories

It was yet another strong year for comedy television, though almost exclusively for returning series. No new comedy series broke in with the major Emmy nominations, leaving us a race between the well-received final season of “30 Rock” and returns of veteran series and longtime Emmy faves “Modern Family” and “The Big Bang Theory,” while second seasons of “Girls” and “Veep,” and a first timer: F/X’s “Louie,” finally making the cut with its best season yet.

So who wins? “Modern Family” has won for every season its aired, and it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the Emmys to just keep that going (a la “Frasier” in the 1990s, which won 5 years in a row). But hopefully they decide to pass the torch to the more deserving likes of “Louie” or “Veep.” Though a swan song Emmy for “30 Rock” wouldn’t be so bad either. Really, anything but “Modern Family” again. Oh, except “The Big Bang Theory.”

The nominations and the predictions:

Modern Family • ABC • Picador Productions & Steve Levitan Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television

30 Rock • NBC • Broadway Video and Little Stranger, Inc. in association with Universal Television

Shoulda Been Here: Enlightened

Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy

Saturday Night Live • NBC • SNL Studios in association with Universal Television and Broadway Video
Bill Hader as Various characters

Veep • HBO • Dundee Productions in association with HBO Entertainment
Tony Hale as Gary Walsh

Will Win: Very tough call, but seems like four in a row for “Modern Family” is most likely here. We’ll say Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
Could Win: If it doesn’t go to one of the “Modern” men, we’d say Bill Hader is the spoiler.
Should Win: Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live

30 Rock • NBC • Broadway Video and Little Stranger, Inc. in association with Universal Television
Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney

Veep • HBO • Dundee Productions in association with HBO Entertainment
Anna Chlumsky as Amy Brookheimer

Will Win: Will Julie Bowen take her third? Or will Sofia Vergara take her first? That seems like the unfortunate showdown.
Could Win: If there’s any swan song Emmy that would be a first for “30 Rock,” it would be Jane Krakowski
Should Win: Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Shoulda Been Here: Casey Wilson, Happy Endings

The Big Bang Theory should win. It's funny from start to end, unlike Modern Family that has no jokes and is so not funny. Also, no other comedy comes close to Big Bang Theory in the ratings. It's the top rated comedy in the U.S. and the rest of the world. Why wouldn't the most watched win the Emmy for top comedy? If they don't win it's a travesty.

GTRET

DOT JONES ANYONE? I like this lady and her character very much in contrast to her show which doesn't amaze me. It is truly a shame that she has been snubbed for the past 2 years. They should make it up to her. She gave a terrific performance!!!!

30 Rock will win best comedy, actress and actor, but in the supporting categories, Modern Family rules, and this year the amazing and outstanding performances of Sofia Vergara and Ed O Neil deserves win, they are the best in their respective categories, God, enlighten the members of the academy to be these two emmy winners

Indroneil

I was rooting for Bob Newhart for Guest Comedy. But that was before Steve Carrell returned. Considering the fact that Michael Scott is the 2nd greatest character to have never won the honour (George Costanza, is first), they might just give it to him

LJA

If the Emmys don't nominate Steve Carrell for his guest appearance in 'The Office' finale, there's literally something wrong with the world. Yes, his last few seasons on 'The Office' were a little unbalanced, but the finale was a very strong episode and his added touches just made it all the better. He only had a few lines, but they saved his best 'That's what she said.' for the finale.

The Big Bang Theory deserves to win this year, as do the actors. Mayim Bialik and Kaley Coucou are brilliant, and have such comic timing. Modern Family is great too, but I think they need to be taken down a peg or two. BBT won this year.

Manfred

What else does Simon Helberg need to do to get some recognition? For crying out loud he just won a Critic's Choice. He was phenomenal this last season of the Big Bang Theory

Ryan

Why not Christoph Waltz for Saturday Night Live??? I thought that his episode was the best of the season, nor deserving than Justin Timberlake, who has won before.

blah

I can't watch Mordern Family anymore. It's not that funny. Veep, Girls, Arrested Development?

Jules

I definitely think Kristen Wiig in Arrested Development is worth something.

Mitchell

Ed Helms submitted in Supporting, Portia De Rossi submitted in Lead and nothing from Family Tree was submitted. You should really check these things before you re-post them.

Aaron

Toks Olagundoye is ridiculously good on "The Neighbors",whether you enjoy the show or not. If i had a vote, she would get it.

Ellen

I want to see more love for The Middle because that is a great show. Modern Family is very overrated. The Big Bang Theory, Suburgatory and New Girl are all much better than that show. I want to see Eden Sher and Charlie McDermott nominated.

Dan

I'm rooting for Jessica Walter to win, not just get nominated. She stands out in a cast of stand-outs.

jacquelyn

There is no way that Amy Poehler is not a lock for a nomination, especially after hosting the Golden Globes and Parks getting another season. She is a lock and a very very competitive contender

Luis

I think you snobbed SNL's Taran Killam. I think He did pretty well this year.

I also would like Mayim Bialik Take that award from the modern family gals.

I would also like the Emmys to snob John Cryer. Giving him the Emmy last year was very annoying to watch.

And if modern family doesn't fill all of the male supporting roles spots, I wouldn't mind seeing Neil Patrick Harris again in that category.

Liz

Jake Johnson has been killing it on New Girl this season-definitely deserves a nod!

Bender

Regardless of Community's decline in quality in its fourth season, Danny Pudi deserves an emmy.

Sophie

Modern Family is overrated so I'd really like to see Big Bang theory take the best comedy trophy this year. I also believe Kaley Cuoco is due for a nomination because she's so brilliant on that show. More Parks and Rec nods would be nice too.

shelly

Put down the pipe with mentioning Allison Williams. She is easily the worst actress on that show filled with questionable acting.
