‘Fifty Shades’ Producer Responds to ‘Fifty Shades’ of Outrage Over Casting News

'Fifty Shades' Producer Responds to 'Fifty Shades' of Outrage Over Casting News

After a year’s wait, the casting for the film adaptation of best selling book, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was announced yesterday with Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam cast as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, and disgruntled fans took to Twitter to protest.

But ‘Fifty Shades’ producer Dana Brunetti, whom irate fans called “an idiot,” “a bastard,” “a beast” and worse, took the complaints in stride, saying he “knew it would happen.”

“You could never meet the expectations of
so many who have visualized their different ideas of characters from how
they read it in a book,” Brunetti told Indiewire. “While some are upset that their favorite wasn’t
chosen, there has been a massive response and excitement to Charlie and
Dakota from the fans. Ultimately we cast who is right for the role on
many factors, but most importantly the chemistry between the two, and it
is great between Dakota and Charlie.”

The book’s author, E L James, tweeted the casting news yesterday, writing, “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed
to be our Anastasia” and “the gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey” in the film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Some fans complained that Johnson, best known for playing Kate
in the now defunct Fox comedy series “Ben and Kate,” didn’t have enough acting credentials or a big enough name (despite her famous parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) and that Hunnam (“Pacific Rim,” “Sons of Anarchy”) is “too old for the role.”

The erotic books (which originated
as fan fiction for the “Twilight” series) follow the relationship between
a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and young businessman Christian
Grey.

Seems fans had already cast the roles to Matt Bomer and Alexis Bleidel. There is even an online petition over at Change.org to have Bomer
and Bleidel play Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele in the film
adaptation. More than 6,500 fans have signed so far.

James didn’t seem to take the criticism personally, tweeting yesterday, “To all of the supporters, lovers and haters – thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you.”

What do you think about the casting of Hunnam and Johnson? Will you see the film?

GOOOOOOOD THIS IS JUST PORN!!! WHY ARE THOSE BITCHES COMPLAINING SO MUCH ABOUT THE CAST????? THEY SHOULD BE THANKFUL THAT TWO ACTORS AGREED TO KILL THEIR CARREERS TO MAKE UNHAPPY WOMEN FANTASIES COME ALIVE! IF THERE WHERE TWO "JERSEY SHORE" MEMBERS CAST IN THIS, IT WOULD BE ALREADY TOO MUCH!

Melissa

Noooo he just is not the description of christian I wont be seeing the movie

The producers lowballed it, plain and simple. I like Charlie Hunnam, he is a decent actor and he is very handsome. However, the actors who should have played these roles genuinely do not resemble the character descriptions, nor meet the caliber of acting style that should be seen for this film. People have said repeatedly, "This book is trash.", "Whoever stars in these movies will have their careers ruined.". I disagree with both statements. I don't think 'Fifty Shades' will be the new 'Showgirls' or 'The Canyons' or 'I Know Who Killed Me'. I just think the producers are not seeking to elevate very far above the source material which, let's face it, aside from the basic story, is not written very well. I think that is the part that is a shame. Plus, if this movie has an NC-17 rating, I think that even though tons of women will still see the movie, that it would be a terrible idea.

ME

Good choice. Was not my favorite choice, but I think they will do just great. Will definitely work.

here's my logic. i did buy the trilogy. i agree with the fans choices. but do everyone think the same? in your naive mind, you think they make this movie for the die hard fans. no, you're wrong. they turn the trilogy to movies because they know it will make a lot of money. they know that the books are controversial. and they know, everyone (mostly women) worships Christian Grey and won't mind to pay for the theater ticket, dvd, or merchandise. Did everyone agree with Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen at first time? no. but you can see know how people get on their knees for him. so why don't you wait and see? keep your mind open. go watch Hunnam & Johnson's works. it's still September 2013.

Wow Dana Brunetti sounds like such an arsehole. It's as though he wants the film to be a flop. He really should listen to the fans, they clearly know the book far better than him. Brunetti, you make yourself look like an ignorant fool who has no regard for the fans and thus those no longer going to see your film.

Astro19

No you asshole, it's not about who YOU want to cast, it's about what the FANS want! We made the book famous by buying it and talking about it! And saying we are the few minority who are disappointed, well I think the general consensus was that matt bomer was the number one can favourite, so no, it is actually the minority who are excited. This guy looks about 40, i thought the point was that CG was supposed to be young?! One less theatre ticket you'll be selling to me.

Anne

Alexis and Mat were naturally perfect for the role. WE WANTS TO ALEXIS BLEDEL AND MAT BOMER

Vanessa

Matt and Alexis are naturally perfect for the role, and also fresh and young, and nothing it's going to make me change my mind.

Despite all the hype this movies going to bomb kind of like gigli. It's funny that this is supposed to be sex from a womens perspective but the reality is its a mans fantasy. This is just feeding into the image that women are sexual objects .

Jordan Hogan

By Jordan Hogan!

I love that they cast Charlie Hunnam! Now I have never read the books but Hunnam is a great versatile actor that has unknown potential because I feel he is still a young actor! I am excited to see this movie now with the casting of Hunnam soley

Kelsey

For those who read the books these are embarrassingly bad choices. Seems they were desperate to meet a deadline set for them after all the lollygagling this team did joy riding in their Audi and revealing in their arrogance and power tripping for over a year. This movie isn't the sure thing it was a year ago as far as box office goes. Too many people are turned off by the way things have been handled by this team and their apparent disdain for the fans of the book.

I don't really understand the anger over the fact that its not Matt B? Did he ever express an interest in it? Did he even want the role?? I saw an Ian S interview that he was interested so ok, but I don't remember hearing that Matt B or Alexis B even wanted this? So how can anyone be mad? At first I didn't think Charlie H looked the part, at least from the pictures they posted with news originally, but I googled him and changed my mind after about 30
Seconds! He's going to be great!

mesa l, valentina

No la veremos ni yo ni muchas de mis amigas fans de esta triologia, simplemente un 74 % a 6 o 10% de votos (favoreciendo a bomer) dicen mas que una "quimica" entre dakota y charlie (change.org)

Johnny

"Too old for the role" Umm, Matt Bomer is three years older than Charlie Hunnam. Fans show their infamous retardation yet agian.

jen

The movie will turn out wonderful. Both actors are prepared for all the nudity it will involve. I can guarantee a lot of the actors we wanted were not willing. Be positive!

Helen

No, I will not watch the film. My Christian Grey is Matt Bomer!

Sarah

Watch Conan obrian interview with Charlie on YouTube! He's totally sexy, charming, masculine, gorgeous, and charming, plus his accent is to die for!

ggfan

I'm glad that Alexis Bleidel turned it down.
Smart move from an actress with way too much dignity for this crapfest.
So no, I wouldn't have seen it with her, and I won't see it without her :)
