Auteurs Week! kicks off at Trailers from Hell, with director Dan Ireland introducing Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological melodrama “Marnie,” starring Tippi Hedren as a sexually disturbed thief, and Sean Connery as the slick playboy who becomes obsessed with “curing” her of her frigidity.
Sometimes considered the first sign of Alfred Hitchcock’s
late career diminishing returns, this glossy adaptation of Winston Graham’s
novel has also been called the director’s last
masterpiece. The lead role was intended for Grace Kelly, but the princess’s
husband put the kibosh on that. In a previous TFH commentary Larry Cohen
expressed no love for MARNIE.
