Halle Berry Will Star In Steven Spielberg's CBS Futuristic Thriller 'Extant'

This comes unexpected! But a welcomed surprise.

Steven Spielberg has cast Halle Berry to star in his upcoming CBS futuristic thriller Extant.

The series will center on a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family, after she returns home after a year in space, says the press release. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history.

Vague, but sounds like it could be epic, as only a Steven Spielberg series can!

Of course Halle will play the astronaut.

“There’s only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career,” Spielberg  said. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.”

Halle Berry added: “I’m always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I’ll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I’ll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one. I’ve found amazing partners in CBS’s Nina Tassler and Les Moonves, and the incredible Steven Spielberg, along with his Amblin production team, whose vision and creativity in storytelling is unparalleled.”

The script was penned by Mickey Fisher, who will executive produce alongside Spielberg, Greg WalkerBrooklyn WeaverJustin Falvey and Darryl Frank

Up next for Halle, Codeblack Films (a Lionsgate company) has resuscitated her Sybil-like tale, Frankie & Alice, for a April 42014 release. She’s also set to reprise her role as Storm in the next X-Men movie – X-men: Days Of Future Past.

I'm happy to see Halle and Spielberg teaming up/ I hope the show is a success!!

Nice casting choice. Also, I'm surprised people are still of the opinion that TV is a step down from a movie career. There aren't many movies that I am looking forward to these days and the ones I've seen leaving me thinking "if this were a TV series it would be so much better". TV is more daring, creative, and engaging than movies. Plus, it must be an actor's dream to stay in their character's skin for more than 2 hours.

I'm definitely looking forward to this show.

SciFi is a good place to be for tv. GO HALLE! GO NICOLE! GO SALLI (Eureka)! GO C.C.H. (Warehouse 13)! Lovin' it!

I really like the fact that she is playing an Astronaut. Hopefully her career/work as a scientist will play a significant role in the story of the series.

As for being in TV vs movies, I agree with those who say that actors are now crossing back and forth with far less hesitation these days because of the quality of series television over the last decade or so. I don't see the problem.

As a playwright, I do have to add that I hope someday, Halle will really make another attempt to do theater. I know a lot of Hollywood actors find it intimidating, I will only ever believe it is worth taking the risk, regardless of success or failure .

Halle Berry is one of the few black actresses out there that is willing to take risks. Sometimes she succeeds and sometimes she falls flat on her face, but at least she is willing to try something different. I wish her the best.

Why feel sorry for her or be disappointed with this news people? In case you haven't been paying attention the best shit is on TV right now, not at the movies. That's why you're seeing more actors, writers and directors making stuff for TV. Hollywood movies are so homogenized now. It's big budget tent poles, remakes, sequels, prequels, adaptations and very little original filmmaking. But you take a look at what channels like AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime are doing and you have to be impressed by the chances they're all taking with original content. So I'm all for this move. I just hope it's good.

Kind of disappointed by this news. With The Call and Cloud Atlas roles, Hollywood was finally using Berry right. But then, I wonder if this is her way of trying to win that Drama Lead Actress Emmy . Hmmm…

@dancelover51 yes sanaa is. she is very rude in person, especially to her fans.

100 bucks says her significant other will not be black.

The pilot script is fantastic. Looking forward to this.

I want to be excited about this for Halle because I like her and respect some of the work that she's done and what she's been able to create for herself in Hollywood. However, I wish other unknown or not as well known black actresses would be given an opportunity to shine, like Nicole Beharie and Kerry W. are being given. I would be much more excited if it were Sanna Lathan or Anika Noni Rose or Viola Davis! … Or Salli Richardson. … Just anyone who hasn't been overexposed.

It would seem, as Ojie stated, that because Berry has been so "underwhelming" at the box office
she's now being given this opportunity.

Congrats to her. Nicole Beharie and Halle are doing there thing.

Another black female lead on network tv. :)

Surprising…not really.. Her movie roles so far have been underwhelming and now that TV is a place of multi-layered roles and kick ass writing…Cannot wait for this show……
