In the Works: Disney Sets Sights on Live-Action Cruella de Vil Film

Maleficent and Cinderella and Cruella, oh my! Disney is embarking on another live-action entry from one of its famed animated films, this time focusing on “101 Dalmations” villain Cruella de Vil. Scribe Aline Brosh McKenna, who has also put time in on Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella” for the studio, will pen and produce the “Cruella” tale.

Disney’s “101 Dalmations” came out in 1961. The film had a live-action makeover in 1996 (where Glenn Close played the puppy-poaching de Vil), and a sequel in 2000, also starring Close. The actress will be an executive producer on “Cruella.”

Meanwhile, “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie as the Sleeping Beauty baddie, hits theaters next summer. Disney did bang-up business in 2010 with Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp, which explains the enthusiasm for live-action updates.

The in-demand Brosh McKenna is best known for writing “The Devil Wears Prada”; she’s also got the new Quvenzhane Wallis version of “Annie” in the pipeline.
