Keenen Ivory Wayans Joins Shonda Rhimes, Kevin Hart & Kenya Barris At ABC

With his In Living Color reboot shelved for good it appears, Keenen Ivory Wayans is making another attempt to return to TV comedy, selling a pitch to ABC.

The network is said to have, at least, ordered a pilot script for the project, which, as THR says, will follow the ups and downs of when “the whitest guy in America” marries into “a sprawling, multi-generational, close-knit” black family.

Apparently, bidding among networks on the project was competitive, with ABC ending up with it.

Keenen will write and exec produce, although with no plans to star in it.

20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment will produce.

With today’s news, ABC is starting to look *blacker* than ever!

Shonda Rhimes is already an established brand at ABC (2 successful shows on the air, and at least 3 more ordered); Kevin Hart very recently sold an untitled divorce comedy based on his stand-up routine to ABC as well; There’s also Black-ish (a recent script commitment by ABC) starring Anthony Anderson, written by Kenya Barris (The Game), and produced by Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy production company; and maybe I should throw in the recently greenlit A Slave In The White House series with LUV director Sheldon Candis adapting.

Is ABC becoming friendlier to so-called ‘black-themed’ content from black content creators?

Might this be due, in part, to the success of Scandal, and awareness of a woefully under-served audience?
Maybe not since the early to mid-1990s, when Hanging With Mr CooperSister, Sister, and Family Matters were all on air on ABC, have we seen this many shows centered around the lives of black characters on the network, at the same time (or coming soon).
Of course, they all still have to be ordered to series…

I am fed up with the Black/White dyconomy. Goodness gracious we live, work & love in a muti-ethnic culture. Why not write a show that reflec this experience.

How about the whitest black woman alive marrying into a sprawling, very affectionate, multi-ethnic, multi-generational white. One of which many of the in-laws are of different races deep into cultural heritage. The black woman maintains her own cultural significance and independence making her similar to her white family in a sense. However she is unlike any of the other in-laws as she hasn't taken over her husband's life with her culture. So everybody constantly mocks their modern post-racial relationship. Family breakdown. The White Family(white Hippie Matriarch- common law husband black father figure to her kids, white son#3 – programmer only dates Asian women, white daughter – married to her black college athlete, white son#2 – divorced with three Hispanic children, white son#1 – married to what everyone hoped would be the pride of the family, a strong black woman. They were looking for Madea and got Alicia Tyler.

Only something that will appeal to black women should be attempted. A black women dating a white man is the basis. However her black family will probably not appeal to black women. It could be technically executed very well however the sub-plots have to be clear interest to women not men. This story will have to focus on the white guy seperately from his wife and in those moments will lose the target audience. White women don't find singular white male story arcs that compelling either. This show will never see the light of day.
