Spike Lee In Talks To Direct Film About 70’s Pop Music Giant Neil Bogart Starring Justin Timberlake

I haven’t been the only one saying it, but the general opinion is that Justin Timberlake
is NOT a movie star.

All his films have flopped, he’s got a weak voice and no screen
presence. As I said about him before, on this very site, that a loaf of Wonder Bread has more on screen personality (and more flavor) than Timberlake. Which
is why when the Hollywood Reporter announced this news, I was, how shall we say
we say, rather distressed.

But THR is reporting that Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the indie project Spinning Gold, a biopic of Neil Bogart, the founder of Casablanca Records  and who who helped discover major 70’s rock
and disco acts such as  KISS, The Village People, Joan Jett  and Donna
before his death at the age of 39 in 1982.

Timberlake will play Bogart in the film, which was written
by Bogart’s son Timothy Scott Bogart, and who is also co-producing the
film with Timberlake, Laurence Mark,
Gary Randall
, and Mark Damon.

Pictures Worldwide
already has a deal to distribute the film in several
overseas markets.

Actually this premise sounds promising, but with

I’ll ask it again, just what incriminating photos of film
executives does he have that forces them to keep casting him as a lead, carrying films?

And yet here he is making another movie getting paid and putting black people to work. Stop hating.

Wow! People are actually calling Beyonce a movie star? What Bizarro World have I stumbled into? 1) Beyonce is a terrible actress. Strictly terrible. This isn't a subjective analaysis. I think MIT grad students fed her movies into a super computer designed to map the human genome and the results were, "She sucks". So that's not even a question. 2) As far as JT is concerned, I agree with Sergio. He has a weak voice and no screen presence. He does well when he is part of an ensemble with trained actors and those with movie star qualities. But when he is asked to carry a film, his flaws are glaring. He should really stick to ensemble pieces where he's got 4th billing or below. Only when he works on developing his presence and gravitas on film should he consider getting back into lead roles. He should really wait about 6 or 7 years when his face has more weather to it and you take him more seriously.

i just finished the kiss bio called Nothin to Lose and was intrigued by the representation of neil bogart as a character in the story of kiss. i dont know about the jtlake casting decision but the cast of characters in the bogart casablanca roster which includes parliament might be very entertaining. bootsy, gene simmons, donna summer and the village people; id watch that film.

I have to LOL at people bashing Beyonce's acting skills in favor of Justin's! At least Beyonce's movies do well at the box office! Beyonce is a true movie star, NOT Justin

Timberlake has came a long way since ..please forgive me..stray dogs or raw dog cannot remember but anyway. Watch Social Network as he did his thing. He is not bad at all. He plays the snobby upper crust caucasian really well and he appears well nuanced in his roles.

Actually, this premise DOESN'T sound intriguing. While people are familiar with the recording stars that Casablanca produced what makes Neil Bogart, himself, interesting? If anything, a biopic about Clive Davis or Tommy Mottola would seem more plausible, and understandable, as they are the RARE heads (or former heads) of record companies (especially Clive) that the general public is, at least, remotely familiar with.

This says COMMERCIAL FLOP. JT simply guarantees COMMERCIAL FLOP DOA.

He has over a dozen movies already to late to put him back in any box. The problem with crossover for black artists is that audience usually abandons them when they do something different. So their commercial appeal diminishes. Thanks black people for keeping black people in their place for generations. Remember don't dream bigger than being good at one thing.

Wheres my Wax Staxx/Atco Records, Thom Bell/Linda Creed/Melba Listen/Sylvia Robinson bio-pics?

Also he has been able to avoid being type-cast in most of his roles you will find range not this typica Singer/Dancer role crap, clearlyHollywood believes Timberlake has the potential to branch out.

I have to disagree with you a little bit, and honestly I think your reasoning is a little bit gratuitous, considering the many singer-turned-actors in hollywood, Timberlake has been one of the few who have managed to not be so horrible to watch from the likes of Beyonce' or Ice Cube. He may not be the best, but he certainly not the worst.

Now that he's lost so much weight, I think Jonah Hill would be a better choice just from a quick Google Images search of Neil Bogart. And Donna Summer should definitely be a key supporting character since she was the biggest artist on Bogart's label and had a legal battle with him. Condola Rashad might be great for that role.

It's a damn shame that Hollywood wants to make JT happen…at least, beyonce knew her limits and stuck to roles which didn't require much acting.
