Richard Williams to Screen his Director’s Cut of “The Thief And The Cobbler” Dec. 10th

Richard Williams to Screen his Director's Cut of "The Thief And The Cobbler" Dec. 10th

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that it will screen the rarely seen, directors cut of Richard WilliamsThe Thief And The Cobbler – with Williams in attendance to introduce the film.

The screening will take place on Tuesday night December 10th at 7:30pm, preceded by Williams’ Oscar winning short, A Christmas Carol. The screening will take place at the Academy’s Wilshire Blvd. headquarters, in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre. The on-going gallery exhibition, Richard Williams: Master of Animation will remain in the building lobby through Sunday December 22nd.

The Thief and The Cobbler has had a long tortured history. Begun in the mid-1960s by Williams, the film spent over 25 years in production, self funded by Williams, paid for by his work on commercials, features (Raggedy Ann, Roger Rabbit), titles and TV specials. After the sucess of Roger Rabbit, Warner Bros. picked up the film. The Completion Bond Company took over the film – where it was subsequently picked up by Miramax and transformed (without Williams participation) into a musical mash-up (released in 1995 as An Arabian Knight). The original film – Williams directors cut – is an unfinished masterpiece. This will be the first time it has been screened publicly.

Tickets for this event will go on-sale Monday Dec. 2nd, more information is posted here. I advise you to mark your calendar now. Below, the Academy’s notice to its membership:

This is quite a coup, the last time I heard Dick Williams give a presentation he didn't want to speak about this film. So for him to present this is a big deal. I wonder how close this director's cut is to Garrett's recobbled cut.

I would hope that the attention being given to Williams and this film at the Academy would prompt the copyright holder to release the uncut version in a restored DVD/Blu-Ray.
