Rome Film Festival Awards: Scarlett Johansson Wins For Voice Role In 'Her,' Matthew McConaughey For ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ & More

While the bearing it has on the stateside awards season race is fairly minimal at the end of the day, you can bet the folks over at Warner Bros. and Focus Features are very happy with the news they received over the weekend and will be adjusting their campaigns accordingly.

The Rome Film Festival handed out their prizes on Saturday, and the biggest surprise of them all was Scarlett Johansson taking Best Actress for her voice-over role in Spike Jonze‘s “Her.” It’s not often voicework gets recognized at such a high level and we wonder if she’ll get a similar Oscar push. Certainly, in our review of the film, we noted her ability to create “a fascinating and multilayered character in Samantha,” the Siri-esque voice Joaquin Phoenix falls for. Meanwhile, on his inevitable road to an Oscar nomination, Matthew McConaughey nabbed Best Actor for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Sounds more of a gimmick Johansson winning than actually winning for being the best actress. I think they really like the concept of a voice getting awards, so they're trying to kick start a series of wins. So in a way it doesn't feel like a legitimate win.
