Terrence Howard Blames Robert Downey Jr. For Getting Him Fired From ‘Iron Man 2’

Terrence Howard Blames Robert Downey Jr. For Getting Him Fired From 'Iron Man 2'

Terrence Howard certainly hasn’t been quiet about his removal from the Marvel-verse and “Iron Man” series after the first hit film. Earlier this year he took a swipe at the comic studio for their dealmaking, in which actors sign for multiple pictures, but Marvel has the ultimate say on whether or not they’ll use them again. “…I didn’t know it wasn’t a mutually binding contract; it was only beneficial for them and they could bring me back or not. They can honor it or not,” he said about why he was replaced by Don Cheadle in “Iron Man 2,” where he was supposed to earn $8 million, an increase from the $4.5 million he took home for the first movie. But now he also points a finger at Robert Downey Jr., who he says suggested him for the superhero job in the first place.

“It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out,” Howard said on Bravo‘s “Watch What Happens Live.”

“We did a three-picture deal. That means you did the deal ahead of time—a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said ‘look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call me back for three months,” Howard added. Ouch.

In case you’re wondering, Howard taking credit for RDJ getting the “Iron Man” gig is nothing new. In 2010, not long after “Iron Man 2” opened, a much more seemingly forgiving Howard had this to say to E!: “”For me to have recommended him, it means all the more so that I helped someone get to where they are supposed to go. Marvel and I are now talking about doing some other things. And Don Cheadle wanted to play that part before I wanted to play it, so everything is very well.”

Well, clearly those Marvel plans aren’t happening—Howard has since claimed they tried to kill his career—and the actor is leaving the ultimate judgement on RDJ to the man above. “Oh, I love him. God’s going to bless him,” he said. [Vulture]

T.H is a horrible actor…he thinks his light complexion is a plus I guess Don cheadle proved him wrong HUH?…Don you are the best.

Ahhhh shaddap bunch of pansies you all
Sound like a bunch of sucky baby's and dumb.
Who cares?!

why don’t you shut the fuck up for a change

Frankly, I always thought Terrence Howard was a little young to be playing James Rhodes. I know he's only about five years younger than RDJ, but he just looks younger to me. Anyway, something about this story doesn't add up. Perhaps it is because War Machine has much more screen time in Iron Man 2 than in Iron Man. I seem to remember at the time the rumor was that Howard was holding out for more money after the success of Iron Man. I don't suppose anyone of us will ever really know what happened. All I know is that Iron Man 2 is a rather forgettable chapter in the Iron Man franchise, but Don Cheadle sort of comes into his own in Iron Man 3. Rumors are that War Machine will appear in Avengers 2. Maybe it's just sour grapes on Howard's part. The amount of money they make for appearing in these movies is ridiculous. $8 mill for Iron Man 2? $4.5 mill for Iron Man? Jeez. Like you really have my sympathy, bro.

Johnathan Nielsen

How do those sour grapes taste? Does that mean Keanu Reeves owes Alex Winter for his career as well.

Its hard out there for a pimp

Yeah we wanna see terrence howard in his own leading role :) he's that good a actor he deserves the spotlight in my opinion

SR skins

A one dimensional actor claiming credit for resurrecting the career of another limited actor.
Now that's laughable! TH and RDJ both have had "flashes" of promise. I think the comments
show the more desperate egomaniac of the two.

I am the same because there is somone who i know called sean somtimes whistles i tell him to stop it which ends up me having the blame more than sean this upsets me can anyone surggest somthing for me so i dont get the blame more than sean who i know

I love Terrance Howard. Howard grab something better! You deserve it!

CAN'T STAND RDJ – so arrogant. He thinks he's Sherlock Holmes and Tony Stark. What a huge egotistical maniac. I like the Avengers but I fast forward when I see RDJ. I think he's a moron and a sell-out. His new drug is an over-inflated ego and he's now over-dosing on arrogance!

Terrence Howard = disgusting piece of crap for saying these things. Why bring it up now? Why, he's trying to flack his own movie, and get cheap publicity by saying mean things about a star who has, let's see, NOTHING to do with his current movie or career. Leave Robert Downey Jr. alone, you cheap hack, and go back to beating women — which, oh, by the way, probably negates anything else you say.

Terrence Howard is handling it the right way. He is still working which is good to see, as he is a great actor, and lovely to see on the big screen. I LOVE his music too! Buy the album so he will make more music.

I'm glad RDJ is working again, and telling the truth in the Iron Man series for all to see about the corruption of governments and the military with fake terrorists. Win! Win!

Black maannnnnn

Wow article blows his comments completely out of proportion.

I'm surprised he didn't put the blame on Black Women, anywho……………….

Terrance Howard is a talented actor with a high-maintenance personality.

Despite, TH's acting talent, he and Robert Downey Jr lacked chemistry onscreen to the point one wondered why the two would be friends.

Didn't work out, but TH has found other important roles and should likely focus more on those current 2013 projects (Prisoners, The Butler, The Best Man Holiday) and forgo further comment on old news from 2008 (even when asked by dirt-seeking journalists).

Boy, Andy has a real knack for making people sound like bitchy a "Housewife." Is Terrence auditioning for the next Housewife series? After seeing this interview, he's a shoe-in!

Talk about a oversized ego! Sure, actors can be selfcenterd, especially in Hollywood, but this is extreme even for Hollywood. His is a god actor but his is far from that special as his Think. He need a serious realitycheck! The fact that his carer isen't big than it is, isen't anyones fault but his. I diden't know if what I Heard was tru but I have Heard that his is very hard to work with and that was the reason that he had problems to get god parts or parts at all. Hearing this just confirms it. Then he blams everybody els for it. Tragic.

the pink elephant in the room is this is why hollywood rarely uses mixed race (male) actors and prefer black actors becuase black actors "know their placs" and don't DEMAND things-they are so delighted they even have a career no matter how small the role becuase its so rare that they are even cast in mainstream hollywood movies in the first place!
However, mixed race people feel more entitled to the spoils; they belive that they are on the same level of whites because they are half WHITE themselves and have full white relatives how could you not compare yourself? there is no way hollywood is going to allow them to compete with or replace the white lead.
This is hollywood beliefs and values NOT mine.

Terrence Howard has ALWAYS been a self-promoting *hole! He thinks he's the greatest looking man on the plant and he thinks this gives him the right to mistreat people. No one likes him on set because he is so conceited. He did Jon Favreau a favor by 'demanding' more money, it made it just that much easier to dump him. Don Cheadle is a better actor anyway.

nadine roberts

howard u queen just shut yo mouth.

Terrence Howard is not very smart, he didn't sign with the comic book giant because he didn't like the power they had over him if he would sign a multiple film contract, and now he's crying because they didn't use him? wow!

Terrence Howard was one of the only things I didn't like about that movie. He reminds me of a smarmy guy that used to loiter by the basketball courts in the public park behind the high school. He would drop hints about having stuff for sale. Eventually it was too exhausting trying to ignore him so I found another place to shoot hoops. Perhaps the producers just wanted someplace else to shoot hoops.

Oh, look, Terence Howard is taking a break from talking about how unclean women are to whine about Marvel and Robert Downey, Jr. Boo freaking hoo. Stop being such a disgusting human being and maybe you'll get more work. Meanwhile I think Marvel and RDJ will be fine if the six TH fans out there decide to boycott them.

Surprised he did go on bet and blame republicans. Its everyone elses fault.

This guy never ceases to amaze… he should blame his arrogant attitude not others for his misfortune.

TH should head over to DC.

I can't remember where I read this, but didn't he get paid more than RDJ for Iron Man?

Consider that RDJ's career was all but over before he did Iron Man. Jon Favreau, or anyone else wouldn't even look at Downey for any acting job. Howard helped him revive his career. Robert could've looked out for him. Terrance should stop crying about it like a little baby and sue the producers.

I don't think Marvel ruined he's career. I think him punching the mother of his children in the face after breaking into her house is what did it.

Glad Cheadle got the job.

Tone LG

He really suggested RDJ for Tony Stark? Good for him. What does he want, half the profits from The Avengers??? Jon Favreau is the one who fought tooth & nails for Marvel to agree to the casting. Not to mention that Downey's universally acclaimed performance was the stepping stone for Marvel's entire phase one strategy, certainly not Howard's very expendable Rhodey.

Most of all though, this is shameless non-news. Howard's bitter and keeps crying the same river and over, while pop media fuel him by reporting on his every levee break. Makes me almost miss the good ol' days of Lindsay's DUIs.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if War Machine never existed. I don't think the Rhodes character was too interesting in any of the movies. But, Howard sounds like a dope here. That is all.

The worst is that he isn't even a good actor. He was easily the weakest part of the first movie. Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan was way more of a best friend role than he was, he was forgettable on every level except for the whiny "Tony! Tony! TONY!" line when he finds RDJ in the garage. It reminded me of a spoiled child screaming "Mommy! Mommy! MOMMY!" I was glad they replaced him. Don Cheadle seems much more pleasant and the character now actually seems like a friend rather than someone that used to be a friend and is not masking how disgusted they are with the main character because he's rich/successful/influential/famous.

As for RDJ swiping his money for Iron Man 2 and cutting him out of the project…. Are we talking about the same RDJ who was reported to have renegotiated his contract after Avengers to see his coworkers get raises instead of himself? That guy? He's the one who did the screwing? Really? Okaaaay.

not a smart move, my man. everyone love RDJ – studios love the money he makes them and audiences love his persona. think about your career a little bit before bad-mouthing him

Charles Richardson

Everyone says "shut up, keep quiet". That's the REAL problem. Everyone shuts up and powerful people get away with whatever they want. Howard doesn't seem too easy to deal with and should concentrate on the many opportunities he does have, but things he mentioned happen ALL the time, and nobody is ever accountable. More people need to speak up everywhere, all the time. Shady people have gone too far.

Howard treated everyone on the set of Iron Man like garbage, and didn't let a minute go by when he wasn't reminding everyone he was the biggest star on the set! Jon Favreau hated him, as well as the rest of the cast. Howard is just an asshole, and it caught up with him

I'm betting that one of the commenters below is Terrence Howard's publicist. See if you can guess which one!

Christine Bonet

I haven't thought well of Terrence Howard since the article in Maxim about how he has to make sure women use 'wipes' before he would date them. It was an uneasy adjustment to Cheadle in the second Iron Man, but I got over it and if Howard was a better person and actor, he wouldn't miss it. This sh@! Ain't free. You have to earn it.

Give this man some baby wipes for his mouth!

He needs to stop talking. All this about how RDJ betrayed him, or that this is a conspiracy to kill his career. No, he's sabotaging this himself. He is starting to sound crazy, he needs to move past Iron Man

I remember living all of that . Terrence whom I've met several times went through a hard time with this . Robert Downey. Did in fact screw him over. Terence even gave up the chance to be Geeen Lantern when the studio was trying to cast a black version of the character . At times Terrence comes off a bit strong but in fact is a great guy . Robert Downey on the other hand is not a nice person , instead he is a self indulgent ass . As for Don Cheadle , omg one of the meanest people I ever met in my life . Rude, biggot. I used to admire him but not anymore

Wow, the buck never stops with this guy!! He blames everyone
but himself for his career troubles. He has had run-ins with so
many people in the industry, including Bill Cosby whom he blamed
for getting him fired from a TV show. As notoriously difficult as
he is to work with, he is lucky to find work at all.

I used to respect this guy as an actor but he has come to love himself so much he can't even be remotely straight. That's fine, as long as your obession is something beyond yourself. I am actually embarrassed that I ever thought highly of him.

Seriously. I would not mind a million dollars to have a part in the movie. What a whiney bitch.

This guy used to be an interesting actor, but he kept crying and tearing up in every role he was doing until it became kind of stupid. And using the stupid word he certainly seems to be that. Very self rightous and arrogant and who would want to work with a jerk like that? Very stupid guy who just put his foot in him mouth big time and will no doubt hurt his career because of it. I've no interest in him anymore what-so-ever so he's already had that effect on me.

This guy's a true asshole. He can't get it through his head that they didn't want to work with him again for personal reasons, so they gave him a ridiculous salary offer they knew he'd scoff at. And I believe BOB about him being high all the time on set – I've heard similar things about him before.

people see sequels for the main character not for side characters and Terrence Howard could have been in it he just didnt want to accept the 1 mil i dont care who you are if you say no thanks to a mil dollars for 10 minutes of dialogue you deserve what you get

While I see where he's coming from but at the same time I am relieved as Don Chedale is one of the best recasts ever as he was great as Rhodey/War Machine as with Terrence who was just good.

I was told by a key crew member he was not asked to return because he was constantly high on the set of the first Iron Man.

When you are getting paid 4 million dollars to do anything, bitching about not getting another 4 million makes you sound like a tool, regardless of whether you think you are right. This is how to screw yourself out of anyone wanting to work with you, and poison the public's opinion simultaneously.

He's nuts. He's a really good actor… but he's totally nuts.

“They came to me with the second and said ‘look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call me back for three months,” Howard added”
I do not agree that
