Ben Affleck Says His ‘Batman’ Won’t "Compete" With Christopher Nolan’s Version; Doomsday Rumored As Villain

Zack Snyder’s currently untitled Batman Vs. Superman project doesn’t hit screens until summer 2015. That’s basically a year and six months from now, but you’ll probably be hearing a little nugget about it every single day until its July 17th, 2015 release date. The latest? Ben Affleck sat down for a long interview with Mike Flemming for Playboy (via Latino Review) and the Deadliner got some decent Batman questions in. While Affleck danced around answers, some replies were interesting. When asked how Affleck’s take on Batman will differ from Christian Bale’s Batman, the “Argo” actor/director didn’t really answer, but said his version wouldn’t “compete” with the “The Dark Knight” trilogy that came before it.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn’t compete with Bale and Christopher Nolan‘s Batman but still exists within the Batman canon,” he said. “It will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill’s Superman character.”

Affleck revealed that he also wasn’t very interested in the role at first when Warner Bros. approached him. “When they asked if I would be Batman, I told them I don’t see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off,” he said candidly, but evidently after talking to Snyder and co-writer David Goyer, the actor was won over. “They said I’d fit well into how they were going to approach the character and asked me to look at what the writer-director, Zack Snyder, was doing. The stuff was incredible.”

What sold him? “It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology,” Affleck said. “It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially.”

As for the super-hostile internet reaction upon the announcement of Affleck as Bruce Wayne and Batman, the actor says he expected it and realized part of it had to do with him ruining (at least in the fans eyes) the Daredevil character. Affleck even admitted that “Daredevil” the film was his one big film regret. “The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got fucked up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman.”

Henry Cavill has also been talking “Batman Vs. Superman.” In a recent video interview Cavill said, “I actually have no further knowledge of this next story, but there’s a good chance Lex [Luthor] is going to be introduced soon or at some stage,” confirming what many already know to be true.

As for the latest rumors, well, self-proclaimed bigmouth producer, Daniel Alter, who is not working on the film, but is a producer on Warner Bros. projects (and he revealed a few other very plausible tidbits last month), dropped a few other nuggets today on Twitter. For one he says the Wonder Woman and Nightwing rumors are true and you will see her in the upcoming film and he also claims Doomsday, one of Superman’s arch super enemies, will be one of the villains of the picture. He also qualified that with, “For the recored/to the uninformed: I am not speaking as a representative/involved in #BatmanvsSuperman. Just a fan/in the biz/hear things…” so perhaps take it all with a grain of salt? “Batman Vs. Superman” or whatever it ends up being called, lands in theaters July 17th, 2015.

In the summer of 2006 I was so excited for Superman Returns. I expected it would be great because Kevin Spacey is a very good actor. At the time he was a great choice for one of the top villains of any comic book, Lex Luther. In my opinion the main villain in almost every superhero movie either makes or breaks that film. The only exception I can think of at this moment is the first Ironman film. Another reason I was excited for a superman reboot was the quality of special effects have become amazing and superman films need great special effects.

I was so disappointed with Superman Returns! Brandon Routh was a horrible choice because he can't act! The movie's plot was poorly written. It seemed like the script was written in less than two days in the back of a Starbucks. After that Superman I lowered my expectations for Man of Steel. I figured it had to be a good movie because Christopher Nolan helped produce Man of Steel, and any movie Nolan is involved with ends up being a pretty damn good movie. Nolan saved the Batman films and made not only the greatest superhero movie ever in The Dark Knight but one of the top ten greatest movies of all time!

I hate Superman and Batman will be in the same movie. I know Warner Brothers wants to copy The Avengers success but Superman and Batman are great on their own! The only way this movie would really work is if Christopher Nolan was directing this film and Christian Bale was The Dark Knight! Ben Affleck is a good actor and a great director but he isn't Batman!!! Warner Brothers don't tarnish the unbelievable job Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan did for them with The Dark Knight Trilogy! Those two men were able to get us to forget George Cloony's nipples on his bat suit in Batman and Robin! In my opinion that should be considered a true miracle! The kind of miracle The Vatican would acknowledge!

Once again Warner Brothers don't take us back to when the dark knight was a nipple joke and superman was giving a ridiculous speech at the United Nations!!! Stop trying to copy the success Marvel Comics has had with The Avengers! Stay with hiring great directors and keep trying to write great stories instead of little story with way too many special affects! I know Christopher Nolan doesn't want to direct anymore Batman films but he is the greatest director in hoolywood right now so give him whatever he wants if you want to make more batman films!

Ben Affleck please ask to remove your name from being Batman…….Warner Brothers please don't make your new Batman as horrible as you made The Green Lantern!!! I could write a novel about how The Green Lantern and Ryan Renolyds robbed every single person who were dumb enough not to demand their money back with a hand written apology signed by Ryan "I could be the worst actor in the entire universe" Renolds!

The fact that there is a NEW batman makes me not so excited to see this. the dark knight was a master piece and ben affleck won't come close to chris nolan

Ben Affleck Says His ‘Batman’ Won’t "Compete" With Christopher Nolan’s Version hahahah you can say that again. People let's face it he's not Batman and wants only to repeat his horrible performance he did on Daredevil where he said basically the same thing. Until it failed then he made up excuse why and it wasn't his fault. He even drugged up George Clooney and Alicia Silveridiot to vouch for him ..which if he really wanted to see hitting a nerve with the fan base bring up that crappy version of Batman. Oh he will try to wow you at Comic con with special effects so they can take the attention off his horrible acting and enjoy the film. I hate to be negative on him but when you flip off the very Batman fan base and cause Christopher Nolan to leave the project you are pretty much a piece of work. Ben you are not or ever will be able to pull of Batman and when it collapses you will see how bad and nasty this fanbase will get as you loose your current one.

Youre damn right it won't compete

Ben Affleck is two years older than Christian Bale… how is this supposed to be a WISER & OLDER Batman? Hell, he's only 9 years older than the dude playing Superman. Not THAT much older or wiser.

As somebody genuinely excited for this film, i really really REALLY hope they don't try to shoehorn Wonder Woman into it.
