Island on February 22nd, 2014 in Tokyo. Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo (animation director of Ghost In The Shell) and produced by
Production I.G. the film, inspired by true events, is about the friendships of several multi-cultural children on Shikotan, a Japanese island occupied by the Soviets after the end of World War II. The official plot synopsis (translated from the Japanese):
In the aftermath of the most devastating conflict mankind had ever experienced, the tiny island of Shikotan became part of the Sakhalin Oblast… and on the unhealed border in this remote corner of the world, friendship among children from two different countries timidly blossomed, striving to overcome language barriers and the waves of history.
