Heart has cancelled an upcoming show at SeaWorld after seeing “Blackfish,” the powerful documentary which raises concerns about the humaneness and safety of keeping orcas (a.k.a. killer whales) captive.
The group joins other musical acts who have recently pulled out of engagements at SeaWorld, including Willie Nelson and Barenaked Ladies. It’s just another example of the potential social impact of documentaries.
“Heart has chosen to decline their forthcoming performance at SeaWorld on 2/9/14 due to the controversial documentary film ‘Blackfish,'” Heart announced on Twitter. On her own Twitter feed, the group’s guitarist and singer Nancy Wilson said that “The Sea World show was planned long ago as an Orlando show. Had we known, we’d have said no then. We said no today.”
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, “Blackfish” was released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures and also aired on CNN. The film, which details the killing of a trainer by an orca at SeaWorld, makes a compelling case against keeping killer whales captive.
“I don’t agree with the way they treat their animals,” Willie Nelson told CNN. “It wasn’t that hard a deal for me.”
