The year-end polls from Cahiers du Cinema and Sight & Sound give a great idea of where collective critical opinion is headed as 2013 heads into the home stretch. But nothing beats the idiosyncrasy of an individual Top 10 list, especially when the individual in question is as idiosyncratic as John Waters. Waters historically spreads the wealth in his annual Artforum list, so it’s not surprising that he goes for the Day-Glo trash of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, which he calls “the best sexploitation film of the year,” and the endurance-test art films of Bruno Dumont, although the director’s double showing, for Hors Satan and Camille Claudel 1915 — Waters lists the latter’s director as “Bruno Dumont — AGAIN! — is a bit of a curveball. Nor is After Tiller, Lana Wilson and Martha Shane’s documentary about the four U.S. doctors who openly perform late-term abortions, a shock, since Waters made a point of pushing people to see the film in theaters.
For Waters, the biggest shock is the inclusion, in the 7th and 8th spots, of Margarethe Von Trotte’s Hannah Arendt and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, both of which are the kind of polite, middle-of-the-road fare that’s traditionally been Waters’ Kryptonite.
