Peter Capaldi: “His Name is the Doctor”

Peter Capaldi: "His Name is the Doctor"

During a global simulcast on Christmas day, an understandably flustered-looking Peter Capaldi (potty-mouthed Malcolm Tucker from “The Thick of It”) took over what can no longer be righteously referred to as the “title role” on the long-running BBC series “Doctor Who.”

Though the episode as a whole was (to put it kindly) somewhat cluttered, show runner Stephen Moffat ended this historic season on a fine note, playing out to the end a thread he’d been spinning for months around The Doctor’s supposedly secret real name. This ploy was somewhat irritating for long-time fans, trained to insist that the show’s title was a question, not a name.

The question was asked many times last night, querulously, by the many species of ancient enemies besieging Trenzalore, until a voice over from Jenna Coleman’s Clara voice over took them task for the mistake, insisting: “You’ve been getting it wrong. His name is The Doctor. All the name he’ll ever need.”

Amen.
