Watch: First Trailer For New 'Godzilla' Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen & Bryan Cranston Roars

If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their “Godzilla” reboot/redo/do-over, we’d say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for “Godzilla” is here. Run for cover.

A couple things distinguish this new on the cinema’s favorite monster mythology. The first is “Monsters” director Gareth Edwards making his blockbuster debut, the other is the awesome/bonkers cast which includes: Aaron Taylor-JohnsonElizabeth OlsenBryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and Sally Hawkins. Here’s the official synopsis which doesn’t say much:

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

However, Edwards recently spoke to USA Today about the movie and you can expect some form of disaster porn with links to a recent tragedy that the movies can’t seem to avoid. “To me, he’s like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we’ve behaved,” Edwards explained. “If this really happened, it would be like Sept. 11. I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up.”

“I’ve just got a secret fantasy—well, it’s not very secret anymore — about living in a world where there’s fantastical things like giant creatures and what it would really be like and trying to take it seriously,” he also said. “And there’s no bigger or better icon than Godzilla.” Indeed.

“Godzilla” stomps on May 16, 2014. Watch below.

Will go for Binoche. But will keep away from 3D because I have a feeling it will be one of those really darkly shot films that 3D will essentially be like watching a black screen.

Nonetheless, an effective teaser.

Great. 16 years later, Hollywood has to learn the SAME LESSON AGAIN. These movies don't work because of scale and scope, no one is fooled into being awestruck that monsters squash San Francisco. There's a reason it was just as effective with toy cars and matchstick buildings. They work because they're stupid, brainless frivolity. When they're taken seriously, they lumber around and sit there and just bore audiences. There is nothing about this teaser that indicates the movie will have depth, characters, or anything of even mild interest — it's just another ridiculous "brand marketing" attempt to fool audiences into thinking they're seeing something worthwhile. This MIGHT impress the Comic-Con crowd, but even they are unlikely to be moved. It certainly will not get one teenager in Mississippi or Iowa to say, "That looks like a movie I want to see." It's just a lot of wasted money spent on a brainless effort to build the hallowed "franchise." Yeah. That'll work. Godzilla. Woo!

The cast is so sick!! Binoche, Hawkins, Watanabe, Cranston, Strathairn and Olsen in a disaster film? I wanna see that!

Monsters

Please tell me Jon Hopkins is doing the score.

"If this really happened, it would be like Sept. 11. I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up."

OMFG enough with the 9/11 imagery in blockbuster entertainment. How much longer till mainstream audiences start saying 'NO' to this? The Ligeti music in the beginning had me going, then they get through the clouds, and it's like "Great, Metropolis has been annihilated for the 19th time this year…"

I think the 9/11 comment was a bit much…..
