The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is set to honor Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio with its Cinema Vanguard
Award for the fest’s 29th edition, running January 30 through February 9, 2014. The award
presentation and evening tribute will take place on February 6 at the Arlington Theatre.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have now collaborated on five films, including controversial Christmas Day opener “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “Shutter Island” and Oscar winner “The Departed.” SBIFF exec director Roger Durling likens the Scorsese-DiCaprio collaboration to other great director-muse pairings, including “John Ford and John Wayne, Fellini and Mastroianni, John Huston and Bogart — even Scorsese and De Niro.”
TOH! recently dug into why “Wolf of Wall Street” has received some negative critical reactions, with reviewers focusing on the film’s supposed glorification of real-life former Wall Street tycoon Jordan Belfort, whose memoir the film is based on. Our review of the film is here, with our site’s ranking of the top dozen Scorsese films here.
Past Cinema Vanguard recipients include Amy Adams, Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo,
Nicole Kidman, Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Stanley Tucci, Christoph Waltz,
Kristin Scott Thomas and Ryan Gosling.
