‘Mary Jane’ A Hit For BET + Record Numbers For ‘Haves And Have Nots’ Season 2 Premiere On OWN

'Mary Jane' A Hit For BET + Record Numbers For 'Haves And Have Nots' Season 2 Premiere On OWN

The series premiere of Being Mary Jane was Monday’s top cable original with a 1.5 rating (Adults 18-49), drawing 3.3 million viewers during the 10pm premiere.

Those figures were enough to make it the highest-rated cable TV drama debut of the entire 2013-14 television season thus far, which is impressive.

According to Nielsen, Being Mary Jane also did well on social media during last night’s series premiere, with the official hashtag of #beingmaryjane generating 12.48 million impressions.

Meanwhile, also last night, over on the OWN network, the season 2 premiere of the Tyler Perry drama The Haves and the Have Nots (which airs during the 9 pm hour, just before Being Mary Jane on BET) delivered record numbers, drawing 2.8 million viewers and becoming the #1 season premiere in OWN history across all key demos.

The episode ranked as the highest telecast in series history, posting double-digit growth in Women 25-54 (up +59%) and total viewers (up +57%), versus the season one premiere (May 28, 2013).

The episode was also the  #3 telecast in OWN history among total viewers, behind only the episodes of Oprah’s Next Chapter with Bobbi Kristina Houston (March 11, 2012), and Lance Armstrong Pt. 1 (January 17, 2013).

So, overall, a big night for black series, black content creators, and black networks on cable TV.

I like both shows, but the haves and the have nots is the show I first got hooked on. Tyler Perry I think should have made the show just a drama series instead.

Being Mary Jane was sorta boring too me. It just doesn't deliver that "punch" that The Haves and Haves Not delivers. I can see Mary Jane fizzling out and eventualy being pulled offof BET. Stay tuned- we shall see what happens.

Please excuse the typo's.

I'm very supportive of strong black women in hollywood. What bothers me is, both scandal and the and the haves and have nots portray them as homewreckers and a white man's mistress. This so belittling yet the ratings are high mainly amongst african american's. At the end of the day being mary jane will be the show that gets the axe. It's too honest and depicts more of america's family reality.

I don't *love* "Being Mary Jane"; I just don't…

Not Shocking for The Haves and Have Nots. Everybody loved the 1st season. That show is about to make Tyler some crazy money.

The Haves and Have nots was great.
