Meet the 2014 Sundance Filmmakers #22: Adam Wingard Introduces a Sinister Stranger in 'The Guest'

Most recently known for “You’re Next,” a home-invasion thriller widely released in 2013, Adam Wingard is an Alabama filmmaker known for his genre work. “I’ve been categorized as a mumblecore/mumblegore filmmaker, whatever
that means,” he told Indiewire, “and lately I am happy to not be directing horror anthology
short film.”

What it’s about: “A soldier on leave befriends the family of a fallen comrade. He soon
becomes a threat to everyone around him when it’s revealed he’s not who
he says he is.”

What it’s really about: “Underneath the surface its about PTS disorder and brainwashing that is not only used on our troops but how that can spread beyond to an unsuspecting American family. It’s also sort of an 80’s action thriller.”

Biggest challenges: “For me it was adapting a more refined and steady style that I am
normally accustomed to. I’ve always had a reliance on hand held camera
work and improv acting, both of which I tried to do away with as much as
possible for this film.”

Any films inspire you? “The inspiration for this film was roughly based on watching a double
feature of John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ and Cameron’s ‘The Terminator.’ In
many ways this film is an abstraction of my own disjointed memories of
being a kid in the 80’s and watching R-rated films.”

Cameras used: “Arri Alexa.”
Did you crowdfund? “No, because I have great producers who have their own capitol.”
Hopes for Sundance audience take-away: “I just want them to have a good time. Not to say this is a shallow film, but ultimately I made this film to be enjoyed.”

What’s next? “Too soon.”

Indiewire invited Sundance Film Festival directors to tell us
about their films, including what inspired them, the challenges they
faced and what they’re doing next. We’ll be publishing their responses
leading up to the 2014 festival.
