Project of the Day: ‘Cents’

Project of the Day: 'Cents'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

“Cents”

Tweetable Logline: A crazy smart 12-year-old girl uses her gift for math and enlists her frenemies to revamp the school penny drive to make major money.

Elevator Pitch: CENTS is a story about girls, math, and “drama”. Our 12-year-old protagonist Sammy does Calculus in the 7th grade and constantly angles to make money. She also gets in a lot of trouble. An outsider, Sammy finds a bit of leverage to pull the popular girls into her scheme to revamp the school penny drive into a major moneymaking operation. But everyone better watch their backs.

Sammy’s single mother, Angela, tries to keep Sammy from making the same mistake she did when she was younger. Meanwhile, Sammy’s math teacher Ms. Dyer tries to nurture Sammy’s natural gift despite Sammy’s reluctance.

Production Team:

Writer/Director: Christopher Boone
Producers: Ella Sitkin & Christopher Boone
Cinematographer: Corey Weintraub
Editor: Reuben Finkelstein

About the Production:  As the father of a young daughter, I want to tell a story about girls and their relationships to each other. Writing CENTS helped me learn about the world of girls, bullying and relational aggression. I want to engage audiences around these themes. I also want more girls to excel in mathematics, so I wanted mathematics to drive the plot of CENTS.

CENTS was a 2012 Academy Nicholl Fellowship semifinalist and was invited to the second round of the 2014 Sundance Institute Screenwriting Lab selection process. We’ve also applied for a grant from the Tribeca Film Institute Sloan Filmmaker Fund.

Current Status: We’re fundraising. I’ve put in $30,000 of my own money and we’re actively in discussions to raise additional financing beyond Kickstarter.
