‘Girls’ Star Adam Driver To Play Darth Vader-Esque Villain In ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’

'Girls' Star Adam Driver To Play Darth Vader-Esque Villain In 'Star Wars: Episode 7'

Girls” star Adam Driver has done the auteur thing—Clint Eastwood (“J. Edgar“), Noah Baumbach (“Frances Ha“), Steven Spielberg (“Lincoln“), Coen Brothers (“Inside Llewyn Davis“) and soon Martin Scorsese in “Silence—but now’s getting his blockbuster shoes on, joining the biggest damn franchise in the planet galaxy.

Variety reports that the actor has bagged the villain role in J.J. Abrams‘ “Star Wars: Episode 7.” Since he is the first actor to be officially signed on to the sequel, naturally, plot details are being kept under wraps, though he is said to be playing a character in the vein of Darth Vader (though let’s hope he’s not related to him in some way). Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving were also named as contenders for the part, but for whatever reason, they did not nab the role.

Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams have penned the script, taking over from Michael Arndt last fall, and things are ramping up for a shoot that begins next month at Pinewood London. Which means that more official casting will be coming very soon.

This first reveal is a pretty exciting one, and we’re stoked to see Driver take the tentpole leap with such a potentially meaty role. Thoughts? You know where to leave ’em.

Is the new villain a weasel? Because Adam Driver is not really the Vader-type.

im loving this to death!! adam is a friend of mine from childhood. i used to work with his stepdad… small town makes it big!!! congrats adam!!

Depending on where they start my guess is that he'll be Luke's evil nephew. Which would be "in the vein of Darth Vader"

Ooooo, Darth Vaderesque? Like.. a Sith Dark Lord? Like the at least dozen of them created so far? JJ's just setting us up. Looking at the actor, it looks like Yak Face is the villain in Ep VII

Darth Plaugueis folks!

I'm glad he's doing (huge) things outside of Girls. He's too good an actor for that dreck.

please mr. kennedy

"… and by 'Darth Vader-esque,' we mean he is a villain in a Star Wars movie."

Oh, lord. I see where this is going. Another CW-style reboot, like "Star Trek", featuring a cast of 20-somethings running the galaxy. "Star Wars" Juniors! High school with light sabers!

Driver can look creepy as f&^%. I can imagine him with a little makeup, slight alien look or just is regular face looking frightening.

What do you mean by a villain in the same vein as Darth Vader? Exactly how? And couldn't Abrams, Kennedy and company create a villain that is entirely new?

very inspired casting. love this. finally a large tent-pole film that casts an actor based on talent and not profitability.

Just watch. They'll announce that he'll be playing a character named Garth Vator, who they'll insist is in no way related Darth Vader whatsoever.

meaty roles in tentpoles are full of empty calories.

he got it because he's younger than the other two and probs not as expensive.

From the Variety article:

"Sources tell Variety that while no deal is done yet, the “Girls” actor is close to signing on to play the villain in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII.”'

Not official yet.

Clint Eastwood isn't an auteur and neither is Spielberg (although I'd hear out arguments for him). How does this guy keep getting so much work?
