Documentary Film, An Act of Love, to Follow Story of Defrocked United Methodist Minister Frank Schaefer.
Rev. Frank Schaefer was stripped of his credentials as a minister in the United Methodist Church in December 2013, after he was convicted in a church trial of failing to uphold the Book of Discipline by performing the same-sex wedding of his son. Schaefer’s story traveled quickly, igniting an international news frenzy. He appeared on The View, CNN, MSNBC, the CBS evening news, and countless regional news outlets. With the news spotlight on him, Schaefer went from being a small-town minister and silent supporter of LGBT rights to an outspoken LGBT activist with a national platform.
Director/Producer – Scott Sheppard
Producer – Kate S. Logan
About the Production:
When film director Scott Sheppard heard Schaefer’s story, he immediately reached out to him about making a documentary. Sheppard, himself the son of a Methodist minister, says “When I heard pastor Frank’s story, I connected with it in such a deep way that I knew I had to make a film about it.”
“I’m thankful for visionary people who see this also as an opportunity to help keep the dialogue going,” says Schaefer. Both Sheppard and Schaefer see the film as an opportunity to contribute to the conversation about LGBT rights within the church and beyond.
Current Status: In Production.
