Included is an action-packed TV spot for Marvel’s “Captain America: Winter Soldier” (first trailer here), full-length trailer below, which promises an expanded role for Scarlett Johansson as well as Robert Redford. Marvel only has the star-spangled Captain up its sleeve for Game Day, but is promising “something incredibly awesome” soon re: The Guardians of the Galaxy.
Disney’s “Need for Speed” (March 14), stars Aaron Paul in a fast-car flick that challenges the “Fast & Furious” franchise, which is pretty hard to top.
Also coughing up the big bucks (some $4 million for 30 seconds) for spots during the Super Bowl were Paramount, with its super-pixellated latest installment in Michael Bay’s seemingly endless “Transformers” franchise, “Age of Extinction” (June 27) starring Mark Wahlberg, Sony with Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (May 2) introducing villains Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn) and Jamie Foxx (Electro) (international trailer here), a clever tweet-centric ad for Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” sequel (first and second trailers) and the Kevin Costner football-themed headliner “Draft Day,” which looks like a well-cast sequel to “Moneyball.”
Meanwhile, Tom Hooper has directed a nefarious Super Bowl spot for Jaguar, featuring the likes of handsome Brits Tom Hiddleston, Mark Strong and Ben Kingsley. In deep baritones they each tell us why Hollywood has a penchant for making its villains of the UK persuasion. Watch below.
Of course Fox promoted its own Kevin Bacon series “The Following,” as well as “24: Live Another Day” and the upcoming Jerry Seinfeld reunion–see the six-minute version here. No money changed hands, according to a tweet from NYT’s Bill Carter: Fox asked Seinfeld and he and Larry David came up with the idea.
And stars were all over the Super Bowl commercials: see Scarlett Johansson’s uncensored SodaStream spot here; U2 launched a new single via Bank of America, while Bob Dylan shilled for Chrysler and John Turturro for GoDaddy.com, future Oscar Show host Ellen DeGeneres danced with the Three Bears for the Beats App and ATT, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in shorts and Don Cheadle with a llama hawked Bud Light. Laurence Fishburne borrowed from the Matrix to sell the new Kia K900. Bruce Willis and Fred Armisen did a Honda commercial. Quvenzhane Wallis transitioned from “From Beasts of the Southern Wild” to Maserati. John C. Reilly did the voiceover for TurboTax. And the ubiquitous James Franco defended his appearance as Rob Riggle in a Ford Fusion hybrid ad to Entertainment Weekly:
“Super Bowl commercials are almost like movies nowadays… In the ad, a lot of the little things in Rob’s portion will have doubles in my portion, but everything will be much grander. He has a chihuahua, I have a Bengal tiger.”
